Lacie USB Hard Drive Not Recognised
Bought a Lacie Little Disk 60 GB to use instead of ipod but it isn't recognised. Drive shouldn't need additional power only the USB port. Based on advice on e90 post I thought this would have a fair chance of working but it doesn't for me. I've tried the BMW USB connector and the one that came with the drive.
Anyone tried this or another portable drive and got it to work? Thanks Jon (Thought I'd try this option as have approx 40GB music and fed up with ages scolling through artists - takes so long it's a crash waiting to happen - and rather not have to keep on putting ipod in/out of car and taking it out of its case.) |

Think I read in another thread about the format of the bigger HDD's. Check to see if it is in NTFS format, if so you will need to format it to FAT32. From there it should work. p.s.- backup the stuff you have on it prior to doing so, or you will lose all the stuff on the hdd.

I actually tested it on an M3 at the dealership since my car was out.

Thanks for the comments, here's an update:
I have managed to get it to work but very intermitently - sometimes it isn't recognised and it is painfully slow and keeps on losing the connection. Even with little on the drive it never got to the point where the tracks were cached. So I think I'm giving up on this approach. I've also tried a flash drive with not much more success - separate post to follow. THanks Jon |

The 135's USB jack only pushes 2.5w or 5v at 0.5a.
Assuming this is what you have: http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10984 and assuming the online manual is accurate: You need 100-240v at 1.5 amps, which is 150-360w. The reason you managed to get it to work intermittently and slowly with the occasional shutdown is because you are managing to spin the hard drive - intermittently and slowly with the occasional shutdown. Get a flash drive - no moving parts!
