Question How to check the Fuel pump

I am about to purchase a used 135i and it has around 6k miles but I heard a lot of '08s needed their fuel pumps replaced. How do I know if I need it replaced?

No need to worry as the HPFP is now covered under a 10 year / 120,000 mile extended warranty.

No offense but has anyone actually received a letter in the mail from BMW NA on this? I've only heard one person confirm they "saw" (but was not given) paperwork at a dealership indicating this was the case. It'd be comforting to see a scan of the extended warranty notice.

No offense taken. Just passing on the word from the other thread. I have a May 08 build and have not received a letter. I will ask the dealer tomorrow when I take the car in for a couple of issues.

I just had my HPFP replaced at ~12k miles.
I'll have to inquire about the warranty extension, as I have not been notified of it in any way.

To the best of my knowledge the HPFP warranty has not yet been extended for 2009 and 2010 models. Instead, BMW has made it more difficult to get the HPFP replaced with a battery of tests that must first be done. My long crank times only got me a software update which also addressed the non-working audio system.

Battery of tests = NO JOKE!
My dealer informed me it was three days of testing, software upgrades and back-n-forth between dealer and BMWNA before HPFP replacement.

there is really no way to "test" the fuel pump in a dealer/test drive setting... obvious signs of a fuel pump going out are a long crank at start-up, hesitation while accelerating, rough idle, etc... if you suspect any of this, have the dealer fix it BEFORE you sign on the line, because even though its under warranty, you inherit all the problems once you buy it, which is very time consuming... and honestly, you shouldn't have to fix a practically new car that you just drove off the lot...

Some dealers are very sensitive with mods like ECU tune, DP, meth-injextion or any mod with more than 10 hp gain. They seems to be OK with intake and cat-back exhaust mods.

I like the people who just shrug this problem aside b/c bmw will replace it through 100K miles... It doesn't matter b/c it is still a pain in the ass to deal with, a huge inconvenience, and could be causing other issues beyond that point with the engine when the pump starts dying...

I am not an expert but I don't think a failing HPFP is mutually exclusive and I feel failure after failure could be bad for the engine long term...

I received my letter, and know of a handful of others who received it. Dunno where it is now, but I got one.
