Clunking/knocking sound coming from the rear, perhaps from trunk or rear interior are

Frequently, but not constantly, there is a clunking/knocking sound coming from the rear of the car when going over bumps. It's a hollow-sounding noise and sounds like something is loose and flopping around. I swore it was something in the trunk but I don't have anything in there and the battery is battened down tight. The dealer couldn't find anything, of course, and said that they even inspected the rear suspension components and everything was as tight as it should be. It's driving me absolutely nuts because it's very audible and I can't pinpoint it at all. Anyone else encounter something similar??

I had something similar and checked all around the inside of the trunk and couldn't find the problem. I received a trunk mat as a gift and after putting in the mat the noise went away. My theory is the noise was coming from the cover over the battery storage compartment bouncing up and then down when hitting a bump.

Hmm, that's plausible. I'll leave the floor cover out tomorrow and see if I notice the noise at all.

If that's not it try a search. There was some discussion of trunk noises and cures sometime in the past.

I forgot to pull the trunk cover out this morning so I'll have to do the "testing" tomorrow. I really hope this is the problem because it's very annoying and just about everyone that's been in the car has commented on "that noise."

It could be the backseat seatbelt hitting the plastic on the back of the seat.

I'll have to check that out. Got my tail lights replaced yesterday and had the dealer check out this strange sound again and of course they heard nothing. My service advisor said that he wants me to take him for a ride and demonstrate the sound when I have an opportunity.

I get a sound like that once in a while from the rear right, but it's really loud as if the seatbelt had been pulled 1-2 feet from the seat and released.

The only thing I noticed last week was that the USB audo playback got staticky only on the rear right channel immediately after I heard the "seatbelt hitting the seat sound". Sounded almost like an amp issue with radio -- could the two be related?!

I've ruled out the floor cover in the trunk, as well as any seatbelts. My dealer wants me to make an appointment so that I can take my service advisor for a ride to demonstrate the sound since they weren't able to replicate it. Not really sure how that's possible since it does it over bumpy roads and the dealer is surrounded by crappy roads. The amp is mounted behind the side panel on the driver's side in the backseat, correct? I swear it sounds like something heavy of that nature is loose.

I fiddled with the rear seats as that was the first thing I thought of; i.e., that one wasn't latched properly. Sound was still there afterward. My car has heated seats but not the CWP so no ski bag.

Might be your tow bracket?

Tow bracket in the front of the car?

I just started hearing this 3-days ago. The noise would indicate that there is something loose and something is being rubbed. When I accelerate, the noise is not as obvious but when I slow down you can hear it go.. daaaaa-doomp, daaaaa-doomp, daaaaa-doomp, etc... I looked and the only thing I notice is that there's a hole that I never knew existed right behind the rear passenger tire by the lining...

Im thinking, this hole is new? and the air must be causing that lining to flap, hence causing the noise?

No update as of now. I'm waiting for a break from school and work when I can stop by the dealer during the day and take my service advisor for a ride to demonstrate the noise.

So, I happened to read a book yesterday about the history of the M5. In the book, they tell you things to looks out for when searching for a used one. On a number of the newer iterations, the author commented that a knocking sound coming from the rear of the car when hitting bumps is likely a worn out rear shock mount. Hmm…

Hmmm!!Worn out rear shock mount...That is highly likely..because the knocking noise I am hearing is coming from the front left of my car..!!

I am getting same noise and it is driving me I have searched everywhere and can not find. Only hear it when going over bumps seems to be right rear area update if dealer finds anything

The sound described seems like one that I've isolated to be in the area just behind driver/passenger's head within the roofliner, where the moonroof glass retracts. I noticed the sound occurs sometimes with the moonroof sunshade in either position and when going over road bumps in the 25-35 mph range. If you gently strike the roofliner with the palm of your hand you can sometimes replicate the noise.

I have the EXACT same sound in the same location. Word for word. I will be removing the light assembly back there this weekend to see if I can find any loose cables or what ever is flopping around that area in the headliner.

I found it by having my GF ride in the back so she could really listen and look for where the noise was coming from. She pin pointed it on the drivers side of the moon roof about 6 inches from the sun roof and about a foot behind the drivers seat. She also pushed lighty on the headliner rapidily in the area she heard it come from and it duplicated the sound exactly it makes when I would drive over bumps at 30-40 MPH.

Hope this helps some folks pin point any rattles or knocks they are hearign that they cant find

Nick

Interesting points made about the sunroof-related noise. I'll have to investigate that theory with my car...
