Is your friend mechanic? When you start a car you can notice remaining mile to next(first) oil change in dashboard. You won’t harm your engine changing oil every 3K miles.

Even though the recommended oil change time is 20,000 kms I did mine at 2000 kms on my own dime. I just couldn't bare having all those metal particles in the oil for so long.

I did mine at 1,800 miles to get out any new engine metal particles. Probably not necessary, but great for peace of mind.
Many on this forum are doing this and then many are also halving the BMW recommended 15,000 mile interval. One every 7,500 miles or so. You pay for the one that's not scheduled (about 100 bucks at the dealer).

I have done two so far. One at 1500 miles (after break in) and then again around 8k. The car still said I have 5k before I need one. I always have then change the oil but not to reset the interval.

I will be changing mine every 6 months or 5,000 miles since my wife will not exceed about 10K a year on it. I will pay for it as peace of mind, especially since we own it, rather than lease it.

without used oil analysis, everything is just a guess...
You need to know wear levels, rates, TBN retention, solids and particle counts, etc. That said, it never will hurt to change out early, unless BMW puts some sort of "special" oil in to aide with break-in. In reality the choice is yours... 500 miles, 1000, 1500, 3000, 5000 are common for cars that do not have an early change-out required. The latest I saw, an owner's manual for a friend's 09 subaru, recommended 1750 for an early change-out. That is probably a good number. |

only 1 per year, or by miles, mine shows 18,000 miles before a change !?! under the EXPENSIVE maint plan they include, I've heard as much as 7 % of the MSRP is that stupid plan
I would rather they drop the msrp and pay for oil changes & pads myself
