Critique My Lap Time: Willow Springs 1:35.8

Help me go faster around Big Willow. By my math, this car should be about 4-5 seconds faster around the track than I am now.

Wish I had more seat time on this day, but I corded another Nexen tire and ended my day early.




Basic set-up:
- N54 FBO/16 PSI tune + cooling
- 255/265 Nexen SUR4 tires
- TCK S/A coils 336/700 springs
- M3 front control arms
- OEM 135i front bar modified
- UUC adjustable rear bar set to soft

Alignment:
Front: -3.4* camber, 0 toe, like 7.5* caster
Rear: -2.3* camber, 1/8" toe-in

Bought toe and camber arms for the back so I can add more camber out back. Car seems to need about -3 to -3.5 or so out back for perfect tire wear.

Looks like you could carry a bit more speed into every turn. Get to the point where you're comfortable with the tires are squealing through the entire turn. I can't even do this myself, but that's where I see you'd pick up time.

Nice video!! I am from the NE and have never been to BW but i can say from my experience and i have tracked everything from high horsepower mustangs,STI,E46 M3 spec E30 to now my 135. Seat time is where its at. Once you trust the car you will be able to drop your times. I know for me the more i trust the car the bigger my balls get and I have less pucker moments which = faster times!!! Keep having fun though!!!!!

You can take turn 1 faster by a good margin. Should be able to kiss that curbing and really shoot out to the right.
You can take turn 2 faster too, try to fight the urge to nab the brakes too hard going into it. You don't have to stay that tight on it but make sure you tighten at the end and track out on full throttle, you should feel the car wanting to let go and oversteer when you're coming up on the exit, then you want to work your way way to the right side of the track to set up for 3.
Your line for 3 was messed up because of the entry, you needed to be way further right and turning in way later. It then got worse because you got on the throttle too quickly and had that jiggle moment. Your car has always looked unusually darty / tail happy.
You want to track out more toward the top of turn 4, then in at that last double apex and straight out full throttle all the way down to the next curbing. Looks like and sounds like you picked up very little speed on the way down and scrubbed off a lot for 5.
6-7 are easy, especially with how much power these cars make, you can make up a lot of your mistakes here by outright speed / acceleration.
Speed through 8 looks good, but you can keep more through 9 if you track out further, turn in later and get on the gas sooner.

I don't have a video of my 1:34.00 lap, but I do have one from my first day there if you want to compare. My line is off in quite a few spots but it's easy to see and hear where I'm faster and on throttle earlier / later -- there were no cone markers on this day and Big Willow is huge with some pretty ambiguous turns. Such a fun track though.

Here's my friend and alignment buddy Robert Choo running a 1:34.4 in a SOHC EG Civic.. This is momentum driving but a good line display.



And here's my 1:34.4 with a passenger.

I think 3-3.5 for the rear is way too much overkill. Sometimes perfect tire wear isn't the ideal setup.

Also - I'd focus on tuning the car a bit more. You're attempting to correct/catch the car on almost every exit point. That's valuable time being scrubbed as you're yawing at the wheel.

Just IMO.

Have already corded two pairs of these damn Nexens due to 'insufficient camber'. The first set of rears corded at -1.6*. I maxed out the stock arms to -2.3* and still corded another pair of rear tires.

The tires are shit, but it does show that the car needs more camber. Even with the front at -3.4 it's hard on the shoulders.

How long have you been driving? I think a 1:35 is pretty respectable for that car on street tires. Those things are pretty heavy.

Turn 1 is the one corner where you're not carrying nearly as much speed as you could. But make your increases there incrementally. It's a lousy corner to go off of.

Your speedo is probably optimistic, being German. But your speed through 2 looks fine to me.

Your line through 4 only makes sense if you're racing and you're protecting the corner. Especially with that car, don't turn right so early, use the full width of the track, make the arc at the top as wide as you can, always hit the apex by the corner worker, and make your time on the downhill.

Your line is fine through 5, which is important. You could carry more speed through 8, but that takes time to build up your comfort level with turning on a bumpy track at those kinds of speeds.

After you slow down after 8, you're turning in too early for 9 and (again) you're not using the whole track at a point where you really should. That said, you're getting through 9 at a good clip.

What do other 135s do at Willow? I've driven one there, but I don't remember much about it.

Here's more advice, if you've got the time and can put up with my voice.

Hi Jack, thanks for the response, and your insights. I've watched your video about a 100 times over the years.

To answer your questions:
I'm about as fast as the other two regular 135i guys here who have run Big Willow. I think this was my third or fourth time there with the car over the course of several years. Have big gaps in track time because I'm always broke.
