Increasing Induction Noise...

Does anyone have any ideas on increasing induction noise on our cars?

N/A and F/I owners are free to talk about tricks you've used, or ones you've heard about.

What I've Done:
After getting some more doo-WAAAAH from my Mishimoto silicone intake boot, I want even MORE!!!

I have a K&N Drop-In with a Charcoal delete, those didn't make that noticeable a difference.

What I'm Considering:
I read on some forum (E90 Post, I think...I barely survived) that putting spacers in between the two halves of the intake box, to create about a 1cm gap is a really easy way to get a ton. One guy removed the non-filter side of the box completely, and said it was deafening (that's what I think I want, but I probably don't). Nice thing about both of these solutions is that they're easy to do, and easily reversed if you don't like it.

Another thing is a CAI with an open cone filter, but people are torn on the benefits/detriments of this (heatsoak issues, mainly)...

I've heard that running the BMS cowl filters or removing your cowl will give you quite a bit more

I just removed the snorkel side half of the stock intake box (snorkel = box on top of radiator) and ran with just the MAF side with my K&N filter.

It was ridiculous; completely and totally ridiculous. It was subtle and soft at normal speeds, but then, when I got on it, or hit around 3k, it just howled like an S54 with velocity stacks! It's insane, and is a little more than what I wanted.

I'll be adding spacers between the two halves and reinstalling to quiet it down, or possibly drilling holes in the sides of the box that aren't facing the engine, to reduce IATs.

The best thing you can do for induction noise on 128 I is pick up a used AFE intake. Or DIY some extra holes on your box. It will bring you glorious induction noise.

After one day without one half of the air box, I have a splitting headache. I'll be reinstalling that half of the box, albeit with some holes. I don't want to sacrifice all of this noise, just the annoying majority of it.

It sounds epic at full tilt, at around 4k+ the kickover from VANOS is insane. Forget VTEC, yo! But that epic sound is overwhelming my poor ears...

Seriously people are choosing more noise over performance - why? Removing the snorkel is putting hotter air into your intake. Can anyone post dyno numbers showing a real increase over stock intake?

Or if noise is what you want just go vroom vroom when you step on the gas.

I'm just testing it out...

It seriously feels like the response is 5x better, and that the power is more linear, with better low end pull. I feel absolutely no performance loss, at all, but dat noise, though!

I still need to quiet it down, though...

Engine noise is a large part of the cars overall experience, what's wrong with wanting to hear it more? I've had slow cars that sound amazing that were way more fun that quiet fast cars. I doubt anyone here would notice the 5hp difference of any airbox changes in either direction.

As for increasing induction noises I got rid of the cowl myself and run the BMS cabin air filters. I can hear EVERYTHING through them. The turbo sounds are awesome and I highly recommend it. I'm still on the stock airbox as well.

Your English reminds me why there's no hope for humanity...

Besides, I don't want to spend $400 on an intake which few people actually buy, and likely won't get the effect I want, which is an other-worldly sound, as close as possible as the E46 M3 CSL.

If you don't like being associated with so-called impoverished, cheap-a$$ crap humans like me (your words), go put $50k on a new car that won't be half as fun and engaging to drive...

Haters gonna hate, but I'm gonna enjoy my car regardless!

Thank you, you emotional sir, you! You get the joys of driving, despite being in the DC area, and having a turbo car...JK!

I just looked at the cowl filters, they look pretty reasonable at $59, especailly considering the benefits you describe. Also, I really like the idea of easier access to the back of the engine, and all the various stuff back there.

I reinstalled the other half of the air box, with about an inch worth of space between the two halves. Gave it a few revs, it retained a nice quality sound, but (thankfully) gave up some of the resonance and boominess of the halved box.

I also took the liberty to find a better retaining system for the air filter, and covered the engine side parts of the upper intake tract with foil tape to reflect any extra heat away from the system. I left the rest black, because the black should radiated the heat already in the system out.

I need to finish my shifter rebuild and SSK install before taking the car on a proper test drive. I would've been done last night, but something went very, very wrong on the assembly (snapped the shift arm) and now I'm waiting for the new parts.

A popular mod for E86 N52 Z4's was removing two foam pieces from a thing called sound generator, which is a pipe running from the intake to the firewall. N52 1 Series have also a similar thing installed, but haven't seen that many people modifying it.

Look up Z4 sound generator on youtube.

Number 10 in this diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=13_1165

Edit: 135i also have a sound generator, according to ETK. Dang. Someone be the guinea pig, pls. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...r/13717575658/

My car didn't have this attached to the stock intake boot. Unfortunate thing, too; I drove a Z4 3.0i (N52 with Sound Generator) and I liked the sound it made. I'm sure my Mishimoto Silicone Intake Boot is louder and more natural, though.

It's your car do what you want. I made a statement about our cars worth, not about you fiddling with your intake. Good luck with your car.

I was under the impression modern BMWs played engine sounds through the speakers? Here is the article where I read about this:

https://jalopnik.com/5973177/this-is...-by-a-computer

Anyone know if 1ers have the "symposer"? A quick google search shows the 2 series has it, and it changes depending on what mode the car is in, i.e. Sport mode is louder.

I didn't realize we had a mechanical piece piping sounds into the cabin, also.

I can't find it right now, but I saw a video where someone replaced the sound file with a Lamborghini sound in a more pedestrian car. Pretty funny.

The n54 has a Sound Generator tube that's part of the charge pipe. No clue if the n55 does?

N55 does not, or at least not that I've been able to find.

Get an AFE intake. I have this with the dry filter. It sounds great and definitely is a no compromise solution. That's why it's not cheap.

Shot a video on a drive this afternoon, the wind noise is terrible, but the engine note pops through when I get on it.
