Gotta say V and 6 are mutually exclusive terms in the BMW lexicon.

and BMW likes to have the displacement exactly 1/2 of the number of cylinders..
I can see 2.0TT in the next 4.

Big engine = big fuel consumption and unnecessary weight.

F1 cars have 3.0 liter. No need to go bigger than that.

That formula results in each cylinder being 500cc.

The most efficient size for making power is around 300-350cc. This is why F1 cars went from V12's to V10's when the rules capped displacement at 3.5L and then 3.0L. Now the limit is 2.4L and they use V8's (300cc per cyl)...

That goes for high rpm hp, but now low rpm tq.

Street cars need tq.

High rpm hp (and higher redline) allows for lower gearing which multiplies the torque and works great on the street (especially with BMW's new 7 speed gearboxes).

How about the previous M3's inline 6 (sorry, I don't know the engine and car codes since I'm new to the BMW arena) for the M1? I think that would make more sense than a 4 cylinder considering both the 128i and 135i use a 6.

^ that's EXACTLY what I said! If anything, turbocharge the 3.2L in the E46 M3/ M Coupe to make 375+ hp

Would BMW still need to be concerned with the emissions concerns with a turbo E46 M3 engine?

Also, it seems BMW may be heading a different direction. I am certain I read the next M3 is suppose to employ the TT 6 formula while the 1 will be going to a 4cylinder setup. If so, a TT 4 for the M1 would make sense.

Now, if BMW plans to drop a M1 with the E82, I agree as listed earlier, increase HP to 350, reduce weight to 3100 at most, and remove the moon roof (US Markets..), run flats delete, and quad exhaust.

Let their be light: M1.

Make mine Alpine White. DANKE BMW!:roundel:

That motor is too heavy (heavier than the 135i's motor, even without turbochargers and plumbing)

Based on some rumors I heard in the BMW Engine factory in Munich, I wouldn't be suprised to see a brand-spanking new engine in the car ;-)

I think if they do it, it will be a new FI 4, 2.0 or 2.5l; M will want to do their own motor. They need a very specific case for it and I think they have one. Go CSL with a lightweight turbo 4, light rims, LSD, CF roof, recaro seats with minimal standard options. The M3 fits into the very fast GT crowd now, this needs to be a racer, light, agile, fast where you have to work the gearbox to keep it on boil. If they do that then it can be better than the M3, it can be faster for less money because you are going for two different audiences.

It won’t sell in huge number’s but that’s OK. It’s a return to BMW racing heritage, to why BMW’s have always been thought of as a driver’s car as they have added on the pounds and $$

I hope BMW does it even if I couldn’t afford one, there is always used, am I right?

+1. hoping for 2.5LTT but if we were placing bets i'd be on 2.0LTT. im almost certain theyll do something along these lines but not till 2010/11 in the "F20"

are you guys seriously suggesting V6's? and there will not be a V8 in this bad boy.

did anybody read E82TT6's ED writeup, he mentioned not being able to see all the engine development rooms on the tour like normal because they were testing a new 6 cylinder engine. For the ///M1 or new x35i series nobody knows

i was actually thinking the same thing when i read that. hopefully theyve figured out a way to do something based on the S52 (i think thats the code, 3.2l E46 M3 engine, whatever) that is more in accordance with the efficient dynamics programme and has a couple neat little N/A tricks up its cylinder sleeve. (WISHFUL THINKING: better mpg than N54) i could see that replacing the 135i and providing a perfect little full-M 1er, lsd, alum panels, flared fenders, all those little performance pack goodies. call it whatever you want to call it. then the 2011/F20 gets into the full blown tii business with some TT 4cyl action.
