Why are automatics for sale listed as manuals?

I spent the last few months looking for a 135i with a manual transmission and couldn’t believe how many sellers don’t realize what kind of transmissions their cars have. Nearly 100% of cars listed as manuals online are actually autos or DCT’s.
IF IT DOESN’T HAVE 3 PEDALS DON’T CALL IT A MANUAL TRANSMISSION!
I can’t say how many hours I wasted looking through photos of “manual” 135i’s just to see that dumb automatic shifter in the console. The sellers here on 1addicts aren’t really guilty of this but online websites like autotrader and cars.com sure are.

Almost as bad as people who list sensatech as leather. Ugh.

My guess is that people don't consider DCT or SMG to be an automatic gearbox.

I share your pain. I spent a long time looking at pictures and wondering how people get a manual and auto mixed up.

1) Auto sales people aren't enthusiasts, or even product knowledgeable people. In most cases, you've got a back office guy filling out a form to cross post the vehicle to different sales webpages. GIGO.
2) There is no penalty to being listed incorrectly that I can see. I'm still looking at their vehicle. I may not buy it, but maybe I'm crazy and give up on the idea of a manual.

good luck in the search. They are out there..

Try buying a X5 4.8is - the rare and very highly spec'd 4.8 litre X5 that preceded the X5M.

It's very different in performance, comfort and style than 4.4i, which every 4.4i owner thinks is special because they got the non-diesel 'performance' X5.

Thats right, every day, you get a car sales alert for a "X5 4.8is" which has "4.4i" on the door panels.

After about a month of searching, I was just emailing people and saying "The 4.4i on your door panels means your car is the entry level petrol 4.4i X5, not, as you have listed it, a 4.8is. A good way to tell that your car is a 4.8is is that it has it written on the doors where your car has "4.4i". Also, your car would be worth $15,000 more. Please re-list your car properly".

YOU UNEDUCATED FUCKERS.

These can be listed as auto-manuals, but they still classify them as manuals.

I was in a BMW dealership this morning, looking at stickers. Without asking a sales person, I don't know if these are automatics or dct's. The wording they put on the sales sticker is sometimes not clear.

Driving a 'manual' transmission is still more 'cool'. People with DCTs driving and listing them don't want to seem like nerds driving moms automatic minivan.

Obviously the DCT is high performance, but it still has a stigma.

This was VERY annoying when I was shopping 135i's. I feel your pain. Haha.

If it can shift for you, it's a damn automatic.

Yes I have felt this pain, I would ignore what it says and flip thru the photos to confirm the truthiness of the manual advertising

I didn't have to deal with the DCT crap when I got my 128, but the issue of sellers listing their autos as manuals ticked me off as well. It got so bad, I had to call and make sure it was a true manual with a clutch pedal (half of them were not). I think it is either laziness on the poster's part or they do it intentionally to get attention from enthusiasts who they know want a manual.
