My spare fits in my trunk. I went from using a mini spare to using a full size spare. The full size is really peace of mind. I once had a flat tire near Nurburgring... and it wasn't a fun drive with that donut.

I believe that this may be incorrect for the US cars, using the TPMS sensors in the wheels.

I know from my ownership of Subarus, that if people put winter tires on without sensors in them, that they would get the warning light after driving a few miles. Then, when they parked in their garages (containing the removed summer tires with the sensors still in them) the system would reset and they could again drive a few miles, after which the system would again show the warning light.

I'd imagine that the BMW system for cars having the sensors in the wheels would act somewhat similarly, and if not exactly like that, would still sense a non spinning wheel in the trunk containing a sensor. If the tire was not inflated, then the warning light would go off, just as it would if the tire was not there at all and had been replaced with a non-sensor containing spare of some sort.

This is what my US 135i(2010 model year) TPMS low tire light looks like. Note this pic wasn't from this trip.

Noop.

A few years back, when I had my mini donut spare tire with me in my trunk... I was at Nürburgring for the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix, I was staying up in Leverkusen and commuting to the 'Ring that weekend. On race day morning when I went to drive to the track(7am) I saw my TPMS light on and pointing to a flat tire. I installed my mini donut and drove to the 'Ring. It began to rain and that's when I discovered the joys of driving with one 255 tire on my right rear and one 125 section tire on my left rear. The car would wag it's tail any time I even THOUGHT of accelerating gently. It was damn scary.

Once I got to the 'Ring... I called a buddy of mine who lives near the 'Ring and he loaned me use of one of his 18 winter tires(without a TPMS!).

My point is... even with the mini donut on my car, and my flat tire in the trunk... my TPMS light was on! The system knows IF a wheel(w/a TPMS sensor) is turning or not.

Btw... I was sooo happy by buddy lent me his winter wheel. I was NOT looking forward to driving some 550 kms at 80 kph on the Autobahn with my mini spare. And besides it probably would not have made the entire 550 km trip back home without some sort of melt down or blow out. It was then on that trip back home... I decided to ditch the mini spare and buy a full size spare! On that trip back to my house... I was able to zip back at a safe 240 kph(W rated winter tire!) with that winter wheel! Life in the fast lane.

I drove home with my mini spare in the back seat and my flat 255 wheel in the trunk.

I plan on tossing one of my winter tires in the trunk. I prefer the round foam that holds the jack to the nice bag Dackel has. I'll put the foam inside the winter wheel and the whole setup inside a discount tire plastic bag that's inside a tire tote, and viola, only 80% of the trunk is gone instead of 90%

The question is; will the jack from an E60 work on our cars? They are all over the web used, and probably in the local junk yard.

The answer is yes. The kit Dackel has fits many BMWs. Here is the list http://2009.bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/71106773536/

There is nothing more satisfying than going on a long road trip with a full size spare tire in your trunk.

BMW really shold have offered us a spare tire option from the factory.

Agreed. I drive 50mi each way to the office and a lot of it is rural highway. Miles between exits, or through downtown. Either place is a lousy place to get a flat tire.

Here is a picture of what I did. I am using one of my winter tires. I bought the jack set off eBay from a five series for $80. Of course the day after I bought it one that was listed for $99 went on a flash sale for $65. Oh well. This one has the tow hook, a different one had the wheel chock. I didn't see any with both. I wasn't looking that hard.

Since I don't use the rear seats, I always have a spare front and rear. I use my winters for the spares during the summer, and vice versa during the winter.

Is there a recommended spare for a 135i convertible to fit in the trunk? The more compact the better since I have a kid, we can always use more room for other things. Thank you.

Just today I have changed to non run-flat tyres. Last week I picked up a jack & spare wheel from a 318i in a wrecking yard. It is a very weird looking jack but apparently factory in the E46 series. The spare takes up most of the available boot space, but if I was worried about practicality I wouldn't have bought an E82 coupe.

You can place a spare tire(space saver or full sized) in the trunk. I ordered BMW jack kit too. For me it is not an option to be at the merci on the side of the road in a far away land like Italy or Romania when driving thru the Alps. Its worth loosing "some" trunk space for the comfort of knowing I won't be stuck - buying a tire at God knows what price in another country.

A lot of guys went to junk yards and bought the space saver tire from a Mitsubishi Gallant. That spare donut seems to work on our cars too. You want a 17 inch wheel.

But for me... having a full size tire was the way to go. I bought the steel winter wheel for an e46 330ci and I haven't looked back.

I have a full size spare in my trunk, and I thank God I got it. On two occasions I got flats. In one case, it was in an inconvenient spot, and I had to drive some distance ruining the tire. But with a BMW jack, like the one above in the picture, and a few tools, I was able to get quickly back on the road.

BTW, a warning, I bought the rear rim for my spare. The rear rim won't fit on the front due to staggered wheels, the tire rubs. I had to buy a spacer, 7/16" thick, to prevent rubbing.

Anyone want to buy the other spacer, LOL!

I mean, plenty of space to just put it in the trunk, or you could also buckle it in to the backseat I guess, but idk about that one.

For those reviving an old sticky.

My kid used my car while hers was in the shop. She got a big nail in a winter tire. She put the full size summer tire on tha car and was able to use the car even kn the snow for a week until a new set of tires came in, and her car was back.

These things only happen whe another car is down

I cannot get a spare for my 135i that I recently got. Tried calling a local BMW dealership and everything. Pretty much the wheel and tire spare that fits a 135i that Dackleone posted is no longer available. I saw it on ebay for upwards of 880$-950$. It's like damn, I'll just get all new tires for that price. :/

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction to get one at a reasonable price? I'd really appreciate it. I'm in North Carolina if that helps.
