Coolant leak I'm not sure of. . . New 135i owner
I'm a newer 135i owner, some of the regulars may recognise me from the recent oil leak I thought was a rear main, but turned out to be the OFHG. No biggie. However, now when I cruise the highway at 75 mph, the engine temp light goes on yellow and immediately to red and then I have to pull over and let everything cool for a few. Then after maybe 2 min of sitting the light is gone and if i keep it under 70 mph and the revs below 3,000 the light doesnt come on at all. I'm talking like 30 min of driving.
When I got home, the coolant expansion tank was beyond empty and steaming. I topped it off with coolant and the same thing happened on my next 75mph cruise. this happened 3 times in a row. I've changed jobs now and do not commute on the interstate and now that I keep the revs down because I'm only going about 40-55 mph to work not 75, I haven't had the problem in over a month. I do however, have splatter under the hood originating around the coolant expansion tank in the front and going onto the engine cover. what is this leak from? is there a gasket there? why is it only when I have the revs and the speed up? P.S - sorry for the book here, but can I use GM-dex cool phosphate free coolant because I work at a GM dealer, or do i have to use the BMW stuff? I have GM dex-cool in there now, but had regular Peak in there after the first two near overheats and subsequent top offs |

What is: OFHG ? - Oil filter housing gasket ???
Your car should not need coolant. You either have a leak or it's over heating. Might be a bad water pump? Have you checked for codes? 2008's only go about 60K to 70K miles before the water pump dies. I would only use BMW coolant. I don't think GM has the same coatings on the inners of their engines. Best to be safe using BMW coolant.

I'd say overheating. Then over pressure due to water boil. Check the water pump (Google will tell how), replace refill with bmw coolant, and see if you have any leaks. Overheating may have caused a leak but you should fix pump first. Happened to me at 70k. If your mechanically incline the pump swap should take 4 hours total. Costs 400/500 if you get quality parts.

This happened to me for a while but my car never overheated or even got the yellow light, just coolant low sign. I replaced my expansion tank cap and now everything is good. I also bought a new expansion tank since it was only 40 bucks but have yet to put it on. Also you can use zerez g05 coolant In your car it's pretty much identical to bmw coolant if not better.

Sounds like your water pump failed, overheating, building too much pressure in the system and bypassing the cap.
