Koni Special Active vs BC Coils (Looking for OEM ride quality)

I purchased my 135i with 158k miles and it came with BC coils. I’ve never been a fan of the quality of BC coils and have always been more comfort orientated then performance when it comes to suspension.

I’ve been searching through the forums for a while now looking for replacement suspension that is just as comfortable as stock. If it were up to me it would have the default M-Sport suspension still on it but it does not.

What is truly the most cost effective suspension replacement that is just as comfortable as stock?

Are Koni special actives the right choice?

And what other suspension components should be replaced at this high of mileage?

Ive read some bushings should be but I forget which.

I’m looking at a set of KONI Str.t for mine. I believe from reading that are a bit sportier than the SA but the SA would be the more comfortable ride.


I’m also planning to replace all mounting hardware, bump stops, etc.

Special Active for stock or near stock ride quality. You will likely get more damping than stock shocks, which is a good thing.

You should replace all strut and shock mounts, front control arms(bushings some with them), rear control arm bushings are more robust and hold up much longer.

I’ve got Koni special active on my car with Mperformance springs. The ride is just about right. With stock M sport springs it would likely be better. As was said before suspension is a system and components tend to wear out. The more you can renew the better. Subframe bushings are an overlooked item that make a huge impact.

What is your drop w/ the Koni SA + BMWPS? I currently have the stock M Sport setup and was thinking of going with your setup. When you say better, you are referring to ride quality? Do you think the added performance of the BMWPS is not worth the sacrifice in ride quality? Thinking of pulling the trigger on this setup and would appreciate any input. Thanks!

The drop on Mperformance springs is pretty subtle. If you’re looking strictly for ride quality I’d stick with stock springs. The Koni Special Active are designed for stock springs. My car still rides well but definitely on the sportier side.
