Quad pipes

If the 1M shares an engine and output numbers with the 335is and Z4-35, do the quad pipes serve any purpose apart from aesthetics?

they weren't functional on the E46 m3, Z4m, ect. It's for astetics and a new M tradition. The dual pipes on my S2000 were for astetics as well.

Quad Pipes Functional

Not functional!? How come I'd see steam coming out of them when I fired up my M3, and smoke when revved? They look mighty functional to me!

I think by "functional" they are referring to if the twin or quad pipes stay separated from each other from the exhaust headers all the way to tips. Yes, exhaust is coming from all pipes, but it is not functional if the manifolds all dump into one pipe before splitting to 2 or 4 exhaust tips.

Hope this helps...

waste of time, money and adds unnecessary weight. Anyone actually see a reason to have them?

Depends on the layout underneath the car really. The current layout underneath a 135 makes true quads (dual pipe, dual muffler) difficult. On the 135i the two exhaust pipes merge into one way up stream right after the downpipes. Given that this is an M I woud hope the exhaust on the 1m is a true dual all the way back.

Whether or not a true dual (quad) exhaust is beneficial... well probably not at these power levels. You would have to really crank up the boost before a dual exhaust truly became beneficial IMO. So in the end it's really just for looks and I think most people are ok with that because it looks badass.

Simply put. The 335 N54 including the 335is is a true dual. The 135i N54 is not, it merges after the downpipes. There is no difference in power between the two configurations I just hope the 1M has two pipes running all the back so people have nothing to complain about.

Thanks for the great responses / insights.
Would still be nice if the quad exhausts indicated some differentiation in power from the M's N54 siblings!

Yes they're functional...as in they work. Do they add any addtional power? Probably not.

I mean they serve no performance purpose.

We are talking from the muffler back (quad-pipes) instead of just larger dual outlets. Vs quads.

Again... it is already understood that single mid pipe is spec'd, but that has no bearing on this thread.
A single mid pipe back is not a truly functioning quad exhaust so I'm not sure how it has no bearing. Just because a muffler has 4 tips does not make it a quad exhaust. If you add dual tips to each muffler on a 335 there you have a true quad exhaust. Like I said I could care care less because there really is no difference in power between the two configurations. It does not bother me, but it will be a talking point for others if the quads on the 1M are deemed as 'fake'

Ding, Ding, Ding. Absolutly correct. Even on a true dual system, power can usually be found by installing an X-Pipe to allow the banks to bleed off pressure between the firing pulses. Good exhaust systems will create a scavaging effect in the cylinder to allow higher VEs. Designers shy away from large pipes because they are noisier.
