It seems that on the redline website, they're recommending D6 ATF as the manual transmission fluid. I'm debating if I should get D4 ATF or D6 ATF for my 2008 128i now...hmmm

IF you park outside in the winter... get the D6. IF you park inside... get the D4. The D4 is a slightly thicker oil/fluid.

A friend of mine asked me how I filled the transmission with fresh oil. I used an automotive syringe-like device, made by Pressol. It can suck or push oil/fluids. It holds roughly 500ml of fluid - and it works quite well. It can be found at most German hardware stores. I bought mine at Hornbach for 22 euros. For anyone stationed in Germany you can input your city's German zip code here to find a Hornbach near you...

http://www.hornbach.de/cms/de/de/mei...t/maerkte.html

You can ask for an, Öl-Absaugpumpe

Pressol Saug- und Druckspritze (suction and pressure syringe) Amazon.de has them one sale right now.

http://www.amazon.de/Carpoint-065624...830116&sr=8-46

To remove the old diff fluid I used a oil change vacuum pump. Most MWR car craft shops should have an industrial tool that can suck old oil from the car's dipstick tube. Just use one with some 8mm vacuum hose attached to the end. Then insert it inside the diff's fill hole and suck out the old diff oil.

Hornbach also sells a fluid vacuum pump(made to suck out fuel, but it should also work for diff oil. Just make sure the oil is warm/hot). The suction tool is made by Einhell ( Benzin-Ölabsaugpumpe)

Hope this helps future guys to change their fluids!

Dex 6 fluids are thinner as a whole than dex 3 fluids were, but really it's just a matter of shear resistance - dex 3 type ATF sheared down to around the dex 6 spec over time.

Id prefer a heavier film for protection, since ATF type mtf is a compromise to begin with.

But I'm not sure practically speaking that at low temps dex 3 (the D4 product) flows substantially different than dex 6 (the D6 product) does.

I bought a vacumn pump that looks a lot like the first picture above at O'Reily auto parts for $20 or a bit less. The hose was too big to get fluid out of the rear end so I had to attach a smaller one but otherwise it worked well.

Arrow Castrol's new bottle for SAF-XJ...

Just to let you guys know... Castrol has changed the bottle of their SAF-XJ diff oil bottle. It's still in a 500ml bottle size, it just looks different now.

SAF-XJ (doesn't have the "+FM booster")... SAE GL5 full synthetic 75w140

For anyone trying to find the correct Castrol differential oil in the US at a reasonable price, it's not easy. I finally found a good "cheap" source based on another forum member's post identifying that Mercedes was utilizing same fluid for AMG cars. Part number shown in photo. Paid $13 per bottle from www.bmwmercedesparts.com but I suspect they had old pricing as I found much higher prices elsewhere. It took forever to receive as it was out of stock. That is a very good price! I paid 12 euros per (500ml) bottle. You paid less than I did! lol Thanks for posting this info about MB selling the oil.

Thanks! I got the MB part, but I think I added an "a" to it which was the issue.

Now to find the MTF...

Thanks again!

OK, so HOW do you guys know that this MB fluid is the same as the Castrol Syntrax 75w140 (SAF-XJ) ?

Most of the websites I find it on don't even have the pic Pablito has posted, which has no reference to even grade let alone manufacturer. I guess I want to make sure this is not just another "equivalent" like RedLine, Motul, Mobil1, etc...

Valid question, and the best bet is to search by Castrol part number. Honestly though since 1 series do not have a mechanical LSD, I'm not sure how much it matters.

It says right on the bottle... "BMW LS(limited slip) rear axle"... to the left of the 0.5L writing.

True, but the reason I need it is because I want to put an LSD in, not for the stock open diff.

Yes, on the Castrol sticker - but once I get the Castrol bottle I'm all set. The point is how do I know what I'm getting from all these online MB part stores ? Most of the online sources that I found reporting this part# have no picture. For ex: run this part# on www.rmeuropean.com, you get a Fuchs; and that is the only one I found that shows you what you are getting, and it's not the MB OEM oil, i.e. the Castrol.

Well... then just buy the Castrol SAF-XJ from BMW or an indi euro parts store. Be sure to read the label and make sure it says its for BMW LSD's. As long as the bottle says that you are good to go.

Well... I wouldn't post here if I'd be willing to pay that kinda $$ for some oil... the whole point is to find it cheaper.

So I guess no one's ordered the MB part# online just yet ?

I've just changed my transmission fluid with Redline D6 ATF. The bottom part of the old fluid (i.e. initial flow) is a little bit of murky.

Now the shifting required less effort, more smooth and less notchiness. So far, I am happy with the change.

Hi guys, just wondered why everybody is using the Redline stuff? I'm in the UKwhere temps vary between about -15 to +25 degrees centigrade through the year, so am unsure what to get. If I put my car details into my usual oil supplier it comes up with this: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-981-fuch...ion-fluid.aspx

What do you guys think? They also stock the Redline stuff.

Also, is this right for the diff?

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-737-cast...xo-75w-90.aspx

Thanks all!
