wastegate question please

2 weeks ago I had the loud wastgate rattle and when I was trying to speed the engine reduce power symbol came up so I called my service adviser and told him that I had that problem with the wastegate rattle and that it's covered up to 80, 000 miles warranty so my appointment is in a week. BUT now I don't hear the rattle anymore wtf ? Now if I go and they don't hear it they won't do anything. even though I don't hear the loud wastegate rattle the engine reduce symbol will still show up. The feels less poerful
I'm stock 54,000 miles

They will diagnose the reduced power code regardless if your wastegates are rattling or not. Just tell the SA it was happening a week ago and suddenly stopped, but you still have the reduced power indicator showing up.

Yes that is correct the engine symoble still shows up even though I don't hear it rattling. I also recorded it when it was rattling

With the two of those together, don't let 'em push you around if they tell you they they won't cover it, especially if you're nearing 80K. Get the phone # for BMWNA and if they try to shoot you down, push a bit and if they don't relent, just call up BMWNA right then and there.

+1

Don't be rude, but definitely don't let them slide without fixing it.

From my experience, chances are there is a less experienced tech doing the warranty work due to the time allotted to book on a warranty job.

here is a few tips:
Do not be rude
Do not be a smart ass and try to explain to them what is wrong with the car
Be persistent and talk politely, the more they like you the easier it will be to get the turbos replaced.
I kept my car 3 weeks at the dealership and refused to take it before they change turbos i had around 100 miles left before warranty expired and i knew turbos were going bad. the rattle was not loud, but it was there and i knew it will only get worse. Finally the manager told me that they do not replace turbos unless i was getting engine codes and loud rattle but since they liked me they did it anyways

my service advisor knows about the extended warranty for the waste gate and told me that if there is a problem that it will b replaced but the thing is that I'm afraid there going to point it some were else

^^Not exactly. The dealer runs a series of test. Then there are a set of guidelines based on the results as to whether or not the turbos are replaced.

Basically, if the test reveal that the turbos are still producing pressure then they will not change anything.

This is what happened to me even though the wastegates are really loud.

Not sure if understood you question, but are you asking if it could be something else?
The answer is yes it could be something else but more than likely it is not and they will replace your turbos.

Just got my car back from dealer . The engine reduce power was from vacuum tank canister so they replaced it under warranty because they had replaced it in the past again. As far as the wastage they were no problem they said no rattle. but us it possible for the rattle to last for 3 days and then go away?

I am at 65K and had the wastegate rattle. Finally I got the half engine light and took it in. They are replacing both the turbos. I have a catback and front mount on the car currently. They did not give me any hassles for either of them. I think we need to be careful which dealerships we take these to. It seems like people have very different experiences.

Hi. Would you please let me know what year your car is? Mine is a 2010 with only 30K miles, and am beginning to hear a rattle up front. I have not had an engine light (yet).

I dont see why the rattle would go away, all variables held constant. It could be it rattles after heating up, or after being held at boost for periods (highway drives with partial throttle). It coudl also be humid/dry/hot/cold changes in the weather.

My car seemed to be worse when it was hot and it was cold outside after being driven at boost for a while. This is just my experience.

I would just let it ride until it came back, you have plenty of time left on the extended warranty.
