N54 Wastegate rattle
I have an 08 135i MT. On decel, theres definitely a rattling sound on 1st and 2nd gear and is not as loud on 3rd gear and above. The rattle usually only happens when the car is warm.
When I unplug both vacuum lines, the sound goes away, plugging in one vacuum line at a time produces the same results (no rattle). The rattle happens when both lines are plugged in.Could I have a vacuum line leak or is it more likely that the actuator arm is loose? No tune. There's no 30FF code, but i'm not holding my breath. The car only has 80k miles On a side note, does anyone know of places in the NY/CT/NJ area that might repair the wastegates/replace the turbos that you'd recommend? Most likely, you have wastegate rattle caused by the wastegate actuator arm being slightly loose in its bushing.
This is a known issue on N54's, which requires the removal of the turbo to repair. Due to the labor involved (typically $2k+) people usually replace the turbos with new ones. If you have a JB4 or MHD flash, they have wastegate rattle fix in software which helps some cars. |
