What audio do I have?

I'm soon taking delivery of a 2011 128i (prod date July 2010). No HiFi on the build sheet but I have tweeters in the doors and no amp in the trunk. How can this be? A prior owner removed the HiFi amp or added tweeters to the base system? Or Alpine was added and the amp is hidden somewhere? Has anyone seen this configuration elsewhere?

The HiFi system has tweeters and subs but not a separate amp. It was the base system in 2009 when my e88 was built. Other years the stereo system was the base. I looked for a document that would explain which was which in 2011 but I can't find it right now. The top Hi Fi has the same number of speakers and an amp. My guess is your 2011 is like my 2009.

Incorrect - HiFi added a black amp in the left rear wheel well:

Midway through the 2011 model year, stereo/base went away and HiFi became standard. Either way, this car seems to be neither (or both).

Yes, and hence my question. If HiFi was standard when it was built, where is the amp? If HiFi wasn't included, why are there tweeters?

I'm in the same boat with my 2008 e88, I have the tweeters but no amp after I had installed my Joying unit. Even though vin showed HifI pro.

Where exactly have you looked for the amp?

Pop the trunk, and look at the left rear corner. Then.... oh nevermind let me go find a picture. OK, here:

If it's not there, it's definitely a mystery.

Yep. Looked there. Just a plastic tarp and no wires. I'm thinking a prior owner added tweeters and sail panel grilles and spliced into the base system (which means it sounds even worse). I won't know for sure until the door card is removed and the wiring looked at and the tweeter brand identified.

Odd! Yeah you may be right then about the add-on tweeters.

There's a tiny chance the amp is between the wheel well and drivers side door, but I think if you had the HK system you'd already know it.

Will be interesting to see what you find out. Please share when you do.

I brought the car to my installer, and he listened and said, "Sounds like Bavsound." He pulled off a door panel and sure enough, Stage One Bavsound. So, mystery solved - no HiFi but upgraded mids and tweets.

Next step - amplification
