Question Need advice on tires for cross country trip

Alright,

I'm getting stationed in Alaska and will be driving from Delaware to Elmendorf AFB in The middle of September. I'm thinking of buying the I08's with extreme contact DWS's. I want something dependable for the long ride, plus something that I can hopefully run all year. They seem to have a good snow rating. But if I have to I will mount winter tires on the factory 18's for that season. Or should I just by winter tires for the ride and run them the whole time in Alaska? Please help leaving soon and need to order them. And if I buy winter tires what doe you suggest (Gill) or anyone?

Thanks!

I would drive on your summers up to Alaska. Then buy winter tires up there or have them shipped there. 17" winters (205/50R17's on a 7j x 17 wheel) is your best bet in a serious snow fall area.

I would also get a 17" spare tire and jack kit for your road trip thru the NW.

Do not think putting winters on the factories would work? What's a good winter tire. I've been in Spain for four years now and have no clue about winter tires.

You can run 18s, but for real snow, 17s will be much better performance wise

DWS for some reason get great ratings despite the fact that they are horrid tires, hopefully you didn't buy a set...They are known for having extremely soft sidewalls, and continually developing slow leaks with heavier cars, and blowouts/punctures. This is coming from first hand experience, and having talked to service advisers who have to deal with the repercussions of customer ire when their tires suck. Think twice about them.
