"1M CSL" build thread

Hello all,

After lurking off and on for some time I figure I'd start my own build thread.

The background is that about 2 months ago I blew my charge pipe on my BMW 1M, started researching replacements and then the slippery slope began. For many years I avoided looking at mods for this car because I've gone down the slippery slope many times in other builds, such as Porsches and GTR's. I've always looked at the 1M as a fun and fast street coupe, not a true sports car. However, after the charge pipe blew I started watching a lot of Youtube and Nurburgring videos from Misha, Team Schirmer, Custom Racetec, Heel & Toe etc and caught the bug yet again for this car. I've decided I want to build a "1M CSL" with better brakes, suspension, power, and tasteful lightening of the car.

Only recently did I find Alex's sick 135i TA build, which will also serve as a guiding light on my own build. I won't go as far as a TA build, but it will probably get close. I prefer something slightly quieter with less external aero.

I'm located in Taipei, Taiwan (here for work) but originally from Bakersfield, CA the home of Buttonwillow! I've been there many times and shall return to that track again one day (but unlikely with this car). In Taiwan we have two tracks here, one being FIA Grade Two. We also have beautiful coastal drives along with tight mountain roads. The build will be targeting these drives on track and aggressive road.

First mods start with the seats - Recaro Pole Position ABE's in carbon. I wanted a street bucket that was as light as possible and these were it. I've used tighter fitting race Recaro's in the past but for this car I decided to keep it more street than track for the seats.

- Wheels, suspension, and kinematics from Team Schirmer.
- Brakes from Essex.
- Xclutch single organic for when I need it (not yet).
- E92 M3 DCT cooler to be used as the oil cooler here. It’s a direct bolt on using OEM lines and twice the size of the stock 1M oil cooler.

- CSF radiator.
- Various peripheral parts from Burkhart Engineering.

It’s not going to fit. It was made for another application. I will have to make my own.

Hi! Excited to see all the changes you’re going to make to your 1er! Would you be interested in selling your old seats?

If you fill out the contact form @ https://www.ycwengineering.com/ and ask for the 1M driveshaft, you should still be able to get one (and pick it up locally perhaps). Mine is still going strong after 10k miles.

Thanks for asking but nah not yet. One day I’ll probably go back to stock and the car.

Ohhhh very nice. How much weight does it save? I didn’t see it in the thread.

I didn't weigh the stock driveshaft, but it is at least 10lbs (maybe 20lbs) lighter. Probably 70% of the weight of the entire YCW carbon driveshaft is in the rear CV joint. Since I did do this modification by itself, I can say that it is just as noticeable as switching from the OEM boat anchor wheels to lightweight wheels.

Right on... I'll look into it. I will do more lightening stuff a bit later.

It's very expensive to get significant weight out of the car... I'll have to pick and choose. Since this is part of the rotating mass I think I will give priority to this piece.

The priority will probably be a GT style CF bonnet/hood to get heat out of the engine bay, then the rotating assembly or unsprung weight.

Hmmmm no thanks. Looks way too heavy and just OK for track. No way to add harnesses either if I decide to add them.

My car isn't a clone either It's a 1M

The oil cooler fits very very well. Like the above video says, it's about 99%. Not bad for a product that was made for the M3 DCT!

I hope this will be enough as far as an oil cooler is concerned. I don't mind doing a cool down lap once in awhile, as I don't want this car to be a pure track car anyway.

I absolutely love the OEM style fitment and not having to add various lines and fittings to the car.

The oil cooler shrouding of course will not fit, as expected. Again, this product was made for the M3 DCT. However, it seems like I may be able to modify it to get it to work.

OEM vs do88 shroud:



The do88 shrouding at least fits inside the OEM front bumper cover. I can either trim this piece, trim the OEM piece, or just take the OEM piece and get it 3D scanned and modify it and 3D print the modified version. Ideally I think if I can get a 3D printed version that would be pretty sick.

Oil pan is out for the AAF oil baffle install. This will be spot welded in.

Thanks! I just looked into and doesn’t look difficult at all since i already retrofitted electric sport seats coming from manual seats! Shipping around now!
