eh, so only the M aero kit is standard on the 135i EU, not the M sports package. and you do have to pay for metallic paint. And why is cruise control not standard ... ! xenon lights are also not standard ... *sigh* this is getting depressing.

Did anyone else notice that "Electric Steering incl. Servotronic (not in conjunction with Active Steering)" is standard on the 120d and 123d but NOT AVAILABLE on the 135i? Does that mean the 135i will come with a hydraulic rack?
Enquiring minds want to know . . . |

Ichiban, bear up man, BMW allows the UK and European buyer to order from an ala carte list while we in the U.S. don't have as much flexibility. So cruise control and xenons may be standard or an option--we won't know until the order sheets are available.

Up to this point electric steering assist has not provided the 'clarity' of feedback that some hydraulic racks do. That being said there are plenty of numb hydraulic racks out there, the Infinti M is pretty numb and I think it's hydraulic.
You'll find a pretty detailed thread on electric steering on this site (with profuse amounts of links detailing the various ways of implementing electric racks and how they can interrupt steering feel). There are some of us that prefer a lot of feedback from the tires through the steering into our hands. I test drove a Z4 with the electric rack a couple of months ago and it was OK - not bad. But not up to the NB Miata's or the Porsche Cayman's feedback levels. I say to this point because electric racks have not been around as long as hydraulic racks. I'm sure the same could be said in the transistion from manual racks to hydraulic racks. I'ts been awhile since I've driven a car with a manual rack (no power assist) - in fact it may have been a buddies '57 Lotus Elite about three years ago - you want lots o' feedback, manual racks are it! ; -) Now our next lesson will be why recirculating ball steering units suck. ; -) |

Servotronic varies the amount of power assist, based on road speed. Active Steering varies the steering rack ratio, based on road speed, by means of a double planetary gearset within the steering column. It is a primarily mechanical system. |

EPS isn't a deal-killer for me, but there'a reason all M-badged cars still use hydraulic racks. |
