Unfortunately it sounds like it to me. Did you just recently notice it?

Had an old 92 camry that had rod knock/destroyed rod bearings...and unfortunately that's exactly what it sounded like. Another indicator is it will really feel down on power.

Didn't know the 128i had a sport mode.

Edit: confusing because it says the OP drives a 128i but the video says "rattle noise BMW 135i."

Guess it's a 135i.

There are a number of things it could be, rod bearings one of them yes.

I'd get an oil sample analyzed ASAP and look for any metallic flakes in it as well as an even more obvious indicator.

Look into fuel issues, and what a stuck injector sounds like. And how to try and diagnose that.

Since it's potentially a big deal, consider a tow to a dealer or a good indy shop. Not just any old mechanic but a place with someone who can really do it right. I'm thinking dealer because they'll know the engine well, and ask if they don't mind getting their "best" tech to look at it.

It's what I think I'd do anyhow.

The older ones (128i) have the D/S mode which is sport mode essentially, not sure if it was only with the option with the sport package where you get the paddles though - yes off topic but he has several threads for this

That is indeed the rod bearing noise I heard when mine went.

The vehicle was not tracked, 65k kms, was under extended warranty.

Tho you're likely not a member of BMWCCA [yet] it might be worth calling Mike A. who is chapter president and lives in East Meadow NY.
