Finally!! Somone with balls attempted the m3post exhaust mod on their 1M

The guys on the m3 forum really like this mod. I wonder if it'll take off as a common mod for the 1M guys.

I have a DIY coming for the 135i guys as soon as I bolt my exhaust back on and test it out.

A DIY for open stock exhaust?

There are many variations to the M3 exhaust mod as it's been common knowledge since 2009:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=320052

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10784727

You can search "exhaust mod" on m3post for the other threads.

I have a spare 135 exhaust so figured I might as well cut it open and see what's inside. I didn't have my camera with me when doing it (I know, ) but I plan to cut it back open soon enough to do replace the perforated pipes with straight pipes (ie: autocouture's version). I'll take proper photos then. What I currently have is just perforated pipes with heat wrap, similar to Prince_of_persia's exhaust: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpos...3&postcount=25

Cliffs:

1M guys looking for a cheap exhaust mod can do something like this (2nd link):

Thanks for the info, I do recall a video a while back but did not consider necessary since the axle-backs available on the market for 135i are decently priced. Still nice to see someone experimenting none the less. Lets hear a sound clip in comparison to your stock if you could make that happen!!

Keep up the good work man!

Is that not heavy baffling as I am sure there is some gas flow from all 4......but that orange/brown heat line around the box was sure an indication how obstructed it was in that area.

I don't believe everyone is looking at this correctly - from what I see, exhaust gases flow equally to each pair of outlets. Notice that the influent exhaust pipe flows directly into the center section of the muffler. The gases then pass through the muffling mesh sandwiched between metal plates on each side, not just on that one side.

Certainly, as in the 135i, only one set of tips is necessary as the gases flow from only one source, but it is clear from this picture that all four tips are used.

Is it possible there are different muffler designs based on country for emission reasons?

I would guess not... if anything would be different based on emissions, it would be with the cats

All 4 exhaust pipes emit gas. Your muffler might have a defective baffle, therefore explaining why exhaust only is evacuated from 2 of the 4 tips. Note, at cold startup, only 2 exhaust tips are opened intentionally to expedite engine warm up.
