Petrol usage

Hi All,

I have my E90 330 (auto) since wednesday. My question to people who have a E90 330 is have you noticed if fuel usage is, what I think excessive?
I got 400km on a tank and I was driving without using too much power ... due to break in period.
My 325 does abuot 600km on a tank and I did not drive the 330 any different than I would my old 325, and most of the travelling was the same route.
Somebody mentioned to me that because the engine parts are still "stiff" and breaking in the usage will be a bit higher but it should become econimical.
At the moment the needle is just on half and it says I can travel another 220km

Speaking of fuel, What type of fuel is everyone using?

I was told by the dealer that premium unleaded is ok, and that I do not need to use Super unleaded fuels like Shell Optimax.

Cheers,

What octane is Shell Optimax? I was under the impression that the engine should run well on 91 octane or higher.

It should even run on lower octane if necessary. It should just tune down the compression ratio to avoid knock and lose some power.

hi weiweiwei

I think the 325 was either 55l or also 60l
the most I got was 680km - driving from Johannesburg to the coast speed at average speed of 140km/h
normal day to day driving 500km-600km depending if I go on freeways or roads with traffic lights.

If you want to get the specified BMW ratings for horsepower, torque, 0-62mph etc then you should use 98 octane for the 6 cylinder engines and 95 octane for the 4 cylinder petrol (in the UK). That's the petrol BMW use to get their performance figures according to their brochures.

Tell me about it! My current E46 318i Auto does about 22mpg (mostly town driving) - i reckon my new E90 325i (Manual) coming in June should actually get better fuel economy than my old 4 cylinder!

By the way, before that I had an E36 316i Auto that averaged 18mpg in town!

Iv just started my own business I have just bought a small ford van 1.8D and I swear, this thing is crazy, it feels like im doing 70 miles to the gallon I love it its like a guilty pleasure knowing how little diesel im using. Iv put £30 in the tank (which isnt alot over here in the UK) and its still over 25% full after lots and lots of miles .

Then I jump in my car (a Fiat stilo 1.6 sport which to be fair I drive fast) and im constantly filling it up with fuel.

But when the beemer arrives I cant say ill be too bothered with the fuel consumption as It will be a palace compared to my good old van.

I'm not so sure about this. To the best of my knowledge you can't even get fuel with that high of an octane rating in the U.S. So it would be silly if not illegal for BMW to claim performance figures that are only achievable from that kind of fuel for a U.S. car.

This isn't a hard question to answer. Any car's owner's manual I've seen so far mentions the minimum ideal octane rating of the fuel you should use. If one of the owner's could look it up in theirs, that should settle it. I'm talking about owners of U.S. vehicles.

Armen52, the U.S. uses a different method to quote octane numbers than the UK. 98 octane in the UK is rated lower in the U.S., but i'm not sure by how much exactly. My octane numbers were for UK spec cars.

Europe shows octane as RON
USA shoes it as ([RON+MON]/2)

So 91 in the USA is around 95 in europe

Generally most BMW engines (non //M) minimum required Octane is 91 RON

I have only had my 325i for 500 miless, so it is no where near run-in or losened up yet and I am already averaging 30 mpg (imperial galloons not US!), in my previous E60 530d auto I was only getting 32mpg. The 325i is a manual and I am very impressed with its fuel consumption so far and it just loves to rev, can't wait for the running in period to finish!

lemon_dakota, sounds like your E90 is similar to mine! Is that 30mpg motorway driving, city or a mixture of both (50/50 or different)? I'd be VERY pleased if I could average 30mpg after my last two BMWs!

Also, tell me more about the engine! All the magazine reviewers over here talk about the 330i and the 320d and overlook the 325i...

For us Americans, can we get a Imperial Gallon to US gallon conversion? Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.
