That right there shows you don't get it. It's like FBO 335i vs M3 arguments.
Enjoy your EPS

I want your active diff though.

theres a laundry list of bimmers I would buy before I even considered a 1m or an m2.

E36 and 46 are the best cars I've ever driven bar none. every M car since then has been in their shadow for me

Ok, you have no credibility slanging your USDM E36 Mock3 around. Lol.
My e36 is fully updated with an modern interior, and a fully built turbo Euro S52. what makes it a mock 3 now?

You see the M2's are depreciating like crazy if you haven't already noticed. Sort of like the middle child syndrome/complex stuck between the 1M and the M2C.

Your M2 will be had in the 30's very soon

...and honestly that's probably what they are worth considering the M2C is out and superior.

Of course all you M2 owners are crying about how that should of been the original M2 from the start. No arguments there! You guys got screwed!

But, don't be so salty about it and don't take it out on us!

Peace ️
i like the M2; but to me the M2/1M connection is like the E36 M3 was to the E30 M3.

it was an 'evolution' of the idea; but not a particularly great one that actually retained the spirit. When the 3rd generation of this idea, the 'next M2' comes out; the status of the 1M will become even more elevated than it is now. Let's face it the 1/2 series are the new 3-series and the 1M/M2 *is* the modern M3 principle laid out for modern times.

I am waiting for the sub-30K M2 so i can street park it and throw it around for errands. I don't think the M2 is even remotely a 'special' car like the 1M is--- having driven several now; but i do think it's a good car compared to other modern cars.

Back to the 1M; it's a shame most people haven't driven one. Even after the hype, it exceeds all expectations of a modern car driving experience. it feels simple, agile, fun, and most of all captures all of the small intangible qualities of why DRIVING is so fun. BMW made one of the most flawed, yet perfect cars ever in the 1M.
The M2C being superior is subjective. Personally I dont think the engine in my F80 would sound right in an M2. or drive right for that matter.

A "collectible" car is not an investment. you have stocks, bonds, real estate, precious metal for that.
Can't drive a stock, wash or wax a bond. Collectible cars are hobbies. There are people who will bring them to shows, autocross/race, take a nice ride or just stare at them in a garage. Who cares what a a hobbyist will do with their car or what they are willing to pay. If it appreciates in value, good for you.
Comparing the 1M to any modern car is silly. Any late model performance car will run rings around a 1M for the same price or less. I can trade mine for a late model Porsche 911 all day. The 911 will be faster, better handling, better quality but in the end, It's just another 911. I wanted something a little different, a little raw, analogue. With only 740 cars imported to the U.S.(that's another debate), I like owing something that not many others have. I will continue to drive mine on nice days on twisty roads for the foreseeable future
The other thing to point out is that collectible cars don't have much of a market in bad economic times. In the best of circumstances, they are no more fungible than real estate, e.g. not that easy to sell. In bad times, you take a real bath if you are forced to sell. So they are toys, unless you drive them a lot, in which case they depreciate and whatever tiny bit of an investment value there might be, is lost.

Can't have your cake and eat it, too :-)

Everything these automakers do is an attempt to maximize their profits. BMW decided a couple of decades ago that their path to riches was to tap the mass market, and over time has basically jettisoned their old-time, core, enthusiast audience. People who are enthusiastic about performance, manual transmissions, handling, etc., are way fewer in number and way less profitable to cater to than their new, "luxury car" audience.

Porsche sells most of their cars at a higher price point than does BMW, and sells way fewer units. I would assume that on a unit basis, Porsche sports cars are considerably more profitable to make and sell than are BMWs. At this point, I'd imagine that both automakers are making and selling more SUVs and crossover vehicles than sedans and sports cars. Porsche's business model allows them to cater a bit more to the odd enthusiast, with such things as manual transmissions, whereas BMW is just using their M-label to sell SUVs and other non-M-worthy vehicles, so they need to sell a few "real" M-cars to retain the mystic that they then plaster all over their other, much more profitable, lines.

From a business perspective, this all makes sense. From an enthusiast perspective, what BMW is doing doesn't make a lot of sense, and the enthusiasts are going to go elsewhere (and many have done so already).

Why I didn't get one in 2011???
I had the same feeling in Porsche 911 T (but I only test driven T and 4S). Can't wait to buy one (waiting for kids to grow up a little).

These words of wisdom. BMW has lost its way, I think, from f10 and f30 generations forward. I can't wait to afford a Porsche....

There were more differences and cost cutting measures taken than just the motor. Yet everyone just focuses on that. It's kind of like the uninformed saying the 1M is just a widebody 135i with PPK or something. You guys only focus on motors and straight line things which continually perplexes me as to why you buy a BMW in the first place

As for the M2C, the only thing it technically has going for it is the wheelbase. An updated F80 is not much heavier at all and a better buy imo. The M2C got fat, and does not get CF/weight drop options the other F8x got unless you pay out of your arse for a non-factory fitted option.

I'm not really an "M-guy," and my 2000 Z3M coupe, purchased used about 4 years ago, was my first "M"-car. HP is one thing (and we all like to have it) but a decade or two ago, every single vehicle that BMW produced was a fun-to-drive, drivers car. My first BMW, and my first car, was a 1973 2002 (not Tii), 4-speed manual, which maybe had 100 hp, and cost $3700 new. It was way more fun to drive than almost everything that BMW now produces, although certainly very spartan and (now) extremely dated. I went for a few years with other makes because I couldn't afford a BMW.

My 1993 325i 5M was similarly a great, drivers car, but which didn't have much more power than a current day Prius, if that means anything, with a 0-60 time that would embarrass a current Toyota owner.

It's a shame that now, in our era, the only glimpse of a drivers car that this manufacturer now offers, has an "M" attached to the designation. Pretty soon, even that will disappear. Time to look at a Miata.

You are not alone. You should still buy one!

For the $50-60k range there is still NO other car I would want used or new....

It’s rare for someone to say that. What people do say is, because of the 1M’s collector pricing on the used market, you can buy a 135i and spend $10K or so in mods and end up with an as fast or faster (track and straight line) and equally fun car to drive for much cheaper.

If the used price vector between the 135i and 1M was only around $10k, like when they were new, the 1M would be a no-brainer to me. At more than 3x the cost, not so much, unless you’re buying the car to collect or you want to have an M car regardless...or you just have fu money and the price doesn’t matter.
