hi there,i'm looking to upgrade my 128i to 18 inch wheels. however,i'm not very good at tire sizes; what is the "correct" size for 1ers on 18 inch wheels,as in it doesn't mess with my speedo and other meters/DTC very much?

would 235/55 tires fit well?

I think the normal is 225/45 and 255/40 for 18 inch wheels. Just do a search, it should be all over this forum. Do a search for "1ers with vmr" and go through that thread

225/40 and 245/35 mpss on my 128. Stockers were 205/50 all around. Dependent on tires. Some are slightly taller / wider or vice versa. Tirerack is the best bet cuz they have all the widths and height of every tire

For example, Canadian-spec sport package 128i comes with 215/40/18 front and 245/35/18 rears from factory.

I run 225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear, no rubbing with an average tire (R compounds usually are wider).

If you lower the car etc then thigns start to get more restrictive...

Lol - depends how much lower. I'm running a Bilstein B12 kit (eibach pro kit springs with Bilstein B8 dampers), it's about 10mm lower than m-sport, and I do fine year round.

I'm not so hooked on the fat tire look on a 128. I like my 225/40/18's all around. Height is only very slightly higher than the stock tire so no difference in speedo etc. Also prefer the more neutral/ less understeer handling of this setup.

If you run a 235/55-18 on an E82 you will probably destroy your fenders and fender liners. 35 is as tall as you want in the rear, 40 series will make the car noticeably sluggish

asbrr has already posted the info you need with the stock 18" tire sizes. With those, if you want a different section width you can go to Tire Rack and look for whatever section width you want, but make sure to match up the outer diameter (it's listed in the specs tab).

Lots of people refer to "35 series" or "40 series", but it's somewhat meaningless unless you also relate it to the section width. A 215/40R18 has a sidewall of 215*.40= 86mm while a 245/35R18 has a sidewall of 245*.35= 85.75mm. For all practical purposes they are exactly the same sidewall height and therefore outer diameter. That's why BMW chose to pair those tires as the stock staggered fitment.

i'm never really going to notice the performance difference. i never really bought my E82 for track days anyhow.

personally,i think the stock 205/50s are a bit too skinny,so i'd probably prefer a wider tire.

I'm running stock bmw 264s 18s on my 128i 225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear lowered on h&r sport springs.. no issues what so ever

i was considering getting a set of 264s,but getting them used is crazy expensive in classifieds for whatever reason.

like $1600.

Here is mine on 19s BBS CH-R...on KW V3...rides great although you will be very very minor rub right were fender meets the rear bumper. Note to self...need to take care of that ASAP. Pic was taken 2 weeks ago when I switched from winters to summers so had not had time to wash it.

Thanks! You look hard enough you can find them used. Great setup though and they even come in 18s too. For your reference if you were to get a set, you'd look for 18x8 et40 fronts on 225 tires and 18x9 et44 on a 255 wide tire. Cheers dude!

Agree - don't see why you need bigger rears given the power, any traction issues are more to do with not having a LSD. Square set-up is the way to go from a handling perspective imho. I don't like understeer.

Exactly right, and I fixed that traction issue with a Wavetrac diff. last year.
