To be clear, you're saying that there was no mention of larger turbos, but that it pulls well to redline? I didn't think it could be done, but on the other hand this wouldn't be the first time BMW engineering exceeded my expectations. Does it really pull well to 7k?
Can you say more about throttle response? Is it as good as say an e36m3? |

GREAT question!
I would set about fitting same size wheels and tires all around. it might take playing with offset a bit on the front. because the tires really fill out the fenders (width wise) all around. After that.. perhaps a slight 1/2 to 1 inch drop to really make it look the business.... the wheel arches had just a slight bit too much gap over the fenders. I'm not talking about SLAMMING it... just taking away some extra space. |

Totally agree with you. Your review is so complete.
Nice to meet you in Leipzig.

I'm a sunroof guy.... but no... pretty sure this car won't have one... leaving it out means it's less weight, and there is more headroom and the price is lower as well. We saw five completed cars, two at the unveiling, (black and orange) and the three test cars seen in the video... at least two of which were indicated as production type mules. I forgot to mention the exhaust... it sounded AWESOME. We were able to have the black completed car started at the unveling.. We're all standing inside with the exhaust fumes building up, listeniing to it and the car was switched off..... we were all.. no.. leave it on longer....! we can spare a few brain cells! It has a very bassy tone at idle... Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 11-24-2010 at 08:11 PM.. |

Where are they keeping all these 1m bmw's that they are making? I thought that production only starts in March of 2011???
Does this mean that there will be earlier delivery dates than previously advertised? |

This is where some of the renderings are off... the rear quarters are flared and are much more noticeable than the front fenders. There are gills, but I hate to say it from what I recall there really isn't much change from a 135... and I'm searching my brain about the gills and this is a feature I just didn't focus on.

They have storage in their plant for 1500 cars... we did see a date for a Valencia Orange car bound for Korea indicating 03/11. Of the many many cars on the line, we only saw three 1Ms. The Leipzig plant turns out 730 cars per day. As I understand it, the headlamps are still in production, so even the ones we saw at the unveiling were not final.

For SCCA types, did you notice how much room there was to stuff more rubber under the stock fenders?

Hey Pete... this car will be a PHENOMENAL autocross car I think... Many items were taken directly from the competiion package /csl.. The brakes, wheels, tires and differential. while I noted the tire sizes... I didn't check the brand... DOH! And yes.. while I wasn't able to test ultimate grip... the ground was wet the entire two to three hours we were driving... I always prefer a square setup and the ability to rotate all around.. One can already do donuts in the car with opposite lock.. so there's power and grip aplenty at the rear. As far as squeezing in MORE tire.. wow.. not much room...maybe 10-20mm? Interesting review, many thanks.
I liked the track review in the rain, because it is in the wet sometimes that a car's character can be revealed so easily. I actually decided on the M3 after driving one of the BMWNA demo cars at Watkins Glen in the rain (Oktoberfest 2008) - after unhappily slithering my way around the track in my 335i, the M3 was a revelation. So it bodes well for the 1M - can't wait to test drive one. Mine would have to be orange.

I was at Watkins for O'fest that year! And I have to agree with you.. perhaps a day in the wet is indeed more informative as far as what the initial characteristics of the car are, so to that end we definitely had an awesome time and learned a lot about the car. You just always wish for dry... but driving in the rain one really learns a lot. |

The cars we saw had 245/35/19 at the front and 265/35/19 at the rear, so first step would be to see if one could fit the same on front as the rear... but if the size you mentioned is the max for a particular class, then there you go. |

No one makes a 260, it's either 255 or 265.
So maybe 265 square, or 265/285 and let swaybars sort the balance. Edit: it looks like 135i guys have stuffed 245 and 275s under those fenders, so it seems likely 265 35 and 295 30 Hoosier A6s might fit, given M3 9 and 10 x 19 wheels. That's pretty decent rubber. Did you notice if it's geared short or tall? Sounds like it'd be a killer if SCCA kept it in D stock with the 135i. I suspect they might move it, though, maybe all the way to A Stock with the current M3?
