By the way, I had the car at the dealer to get the a/c worked on and they offered to replace the air filter for $150! So glad I did it the other day.

Thank you very much for this write up! I am now concerned about using a K&N filter - does anyone have a great recommendation for a new paper element or other filter? I also, don't need the extra 1-2 hp and want to run clean as possible.

Thank you for any great suggestions/brands I should look at... look forward to replacing mine this weekend

I know Andrey_GTA has the cone version for the European airbox. Not sure of anyone with the North American airbox.

By the looks of the air box the way it's design makes me want to retrofit it. Placing a silicone elbow from the intake manifold to the box and pipe inside so you can fit a cone filter inside and make a icebox.. Does anyone understand what I mean? This would be a cool project

Awesome DIY, thank you! All I wanted to do was get a good visibility on the retaining clip that holds the headlight bulb in so I could fabricate one with some wire, I was about 15 mins away from taking the bumper off to get the headlight housing out. This was so much simpler, thanks!

I'm unimpressed that BMW made a regular service item so labor intensive to replace. Possibly to encourage people to go to their dealers. I wonder what else was designed with the same objective in mind.....

Changed out the air filter today.

A couple of extra things I did:
1. Used a 6mm socket instead of a flat head screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp. Why they still make slotted screws is beyond me.
2. Spread a thin coat of silicone lubricant on the inside of the hose. It made sliding the airbox tube into the hose a lot easier.
3. Inserted the airbox tube into the hose bottom side first. That assured me that the tube was completely inserted into the hose.
