Fuel Door issue

Just trying to see if anyone else has had this problem.

- For the second time now the part that keeps the fuel door closed is broken. the door will not stay shut unless i hold it in place and lock the car, then when i unlock it it partially opens for some reason. I had this problem once before and BMW just fixed it in like 20 min with a new part. its soem little plastic piece on the inside of the fuel door.

What do you guys think?

Same exact thing happened to me once...I had to hold the door closed until it locked but then it would partially open when unlocked again.

It sounds like a stupid question, but are you sure you tightened the fuel cap properly? Remove the fuel cap and twist it on again. That was my problem when I thought the door was broken.

I had this same problem, and after being told by Col Crawford BMW in Sydney that i would have to wait 3 weeks for an appointment i took it out myself. What i found was that there was a c shaped spring clip that clips into the plastic piston. On mine the small 2.5mm top of the "C" broke off and this meant that it could not stay in the retracted position.

With the catch removed the filler flap will finally stay down and tomorrow i am going to through the part on the SA's desk and demand a replacement part which i will fit myself. Since i have a 2nd broken brake light i might even ask for them to give me the part because in all honesty most of their technicians are no more trained or apt at minor bodywork repairs then most of us, and at least we can do it a shit tonne quicker.

Reviving old thread but this has happened to me twice in the 2 years I've owned the car. Really stupid for something so small to become a problem, especially in NJ where we aren't allowed to pump our own gas and the attendant fumbles with it then gives up. BMW isn't turning into 1990's Cadillac, is it?

just curious.....

for the people who have had this problem, do you fill up your gas yourself, or do you often use full service pumps?

i refuse to use full service unless I dont have a choice.....those attendants are really rough on the fuel door.

If you have to use an attendant, couldn't you work the door and have them pump?

are you serious? I have a bass heavy sub setup in my trunk. These springs that you talk about, is it something we can fix or take it to the dealership?

Sub woofers have nothing to do with it.

I also have a 2002 325i that has the same fuel door spring. I've replaced three. This is a standard design with BMW and has had problems for years. Costs $10 to replace.

I decided to open up the catch thingy and its exactly what jmh1983 said. I have decided I am not going to pay the $15 It costs and go thru a whole bunch of them. can easily end up costing $100+ in the long run. I got my dremel and trimmed down the piston to where my fuel door sits flush. I can still open it with my finger easily. The fuel door still locks when I lock the car.

Bumping an old thread. Mine broke yesterday or at least when I went out to my car tonight. Have you guys been taking it in for warranty for fix or replacing the part yourself? Does anybody have a part # or any DIYs on how to fix?

Also, for those of you with subwoofers, did the dealership say anything about warranty work after they found out you have aftermarket parts installed?

Would like to get this resolved asap.

there is a little tit that sticks from a small tab in the gas door.

Mine fell off and I had to replace it. Now my door works again
