Some parts followed me home yesterday. When they arrive the rear quarters will be an extra $1192. That's just shy of my wheel budget
My goal is to have the motor in by Saturday. I don't get too much time after work but I have to do the 3 nutserts befor it goes in. I will be nice to get a motor out of the way and to get the engine hoist back in the basement with the two cars of crap I have down there. ( anybody need rear seats or plastic trims ?)

Holy awesomesauce! I may just do the S65 swap someday myself so it's always cool to see someone else getting it done! I'll definitely be following this build!

Well a bit closer to setting the motor in. I need to get the rear brake lines from the 128 out and put the heat shields in. The clutch line is the same shape but it has the heat shield. Four other cylinders obviously go down the left side so there are a couple of differences to ge changed along with swapping out the booster and master cylinder. Here are a couple pics. The tape measure shows the two studs at 6 and 9 inches on the frame rail. I did the nut inserts because it was easier than welding in the threaded studs.

So I'm going to leave these pics here. Got the early shift at work today so I got some more time to work on the car. The next time the motor comes out its getting dropped with the subframe.

ok after searching through ista I'm pulling my hair out again. BMW makes wiring a pain in the ass when it comes to M cars. There is no real Bentley manual for them. The E82 is very similar tot he E9x cars, that how i survived the N55 swap into the wagon. These M cars are a ghost because ista is nothing be general on a majority of it.

Today I spent some time working on the harness. On the physical side its a pain in the ass because the left side has a tar like seal around bundle at the firewall cross through. I had to literally heat and separate each wire from this mess after heating it up to soften the molding around the bundle.

The M3 DSC has only 3 additional wires compared to my 128i
M3 DSC
pin#
12/13 EDC module
41 signal from edc/dsc/sport switch

the EDC/sport/DSC switch carries 8 wires
pin #
1 ground
2 to a grey red junction (still tracing)
3 to right engine bay side
4 to right engine bay side
5 not used
6 to DSC #41
7 to body control #18 front blue plug
8 to body control rear black
9 to body control rear black #2
10 not used

At this point I know for certain there will be no EDC, Ohlins coilovers will be used. The sport button has the potential of being removed because the DME can be programmed for sport mode permanently. I am not that concerned about ramping up the throttle pedal response. Obviously DSC functions will be needed for around town and track use.

here is pick of the mess/hurdle that BMW puts in the way of tearing down a wire harness.

Well damn, this is an ambitious project. Interested to watch your progress.

I've done a couple engine swaps... I always hate the wiring bit, since I feel like I never know 100% for sure that I'm doing it right.

Gahd the wiring looks like a nightmare. That's something I've never felt that comfortable with. Props to you for DIYing all this man

I will have more time to get it up and going to the body shop after this weekend.
I just put a shorter diff in my 128 for the track day this weekend. Then it's going into storage so it wont eat up more time and cash. That means I have the extra space to get the wiring done and time for ripping my hair out. on this swap/ conversion.

Any chance you'd share your source for the OEM wiring diagrams?

Cause I can't imagine you're winging this all on your own!

The DME pin out is available but the 6011.6021,6031,6041 plug are not listed on ISTA. I have to check BMW planet with the correct software to see if i can locate them. BMW hides the M stuff.

I wish I had more time to work on this project!!!

Today was not bad though I finally have the dme to body plug separated from the M3 body harness along with the fan plug. Because I will be running the lci halogens I did not swap the headlight harness the extra $1000 and 3lbs was not worth it. Plus I hate the xenons in my 128 because of the drl codes all the time.

The fan harness needs to be swapped because the plug and larger wire size is needed for the higher out put fan. I may look into running a stock 128/135 fan if there is a less than significant difference in amount of air flow.

For the ebox there is an additional plug x60x1 plug to accommodate a couple additional wires. Surprisingly a bunch of the x60x1 plug wires route back to the dme or are in the can bus bundle. The dme black plug to the body is additional on the M3. The 128 has only the grey plug where the M3 has the black and grey along with the power plug on the end. When all is wired in the car. I will post my excel sheet that has the pin outs and where they go in the E82 chassis.

For comparison a n55 harness is 98% matching up wires, the S65 has about a 70% match up. It’s about 20 additional wires in the end. When the install starts there with be about 15(not included in the 20) wires that are doubles going into the chassis. Yes this fun and challenging, not for the faint of heart. I think it took more stones to do the n52 to n55 manual swap on a clean tile wagon than this swap. I don’t feel as scared, more anxious to get the project moving.

The skinny harness pic is what has been taken from the M3 and going into the 128. The big one is the leftover mess. Btw there is no way in Sam Hell that I would ever want to retrofit EDC

I have huge respect for you taking on this project. Subscribing to see the progress and the end result.

My dream is a 1M5 (s85 v10 swap) and I hope to make it happen someday. Those wiring pics give me anxiety, I wouldnt even know where to begin.

Spent some time tonight today on the harness. The DME on the M3 has both grey and black plugs with a third power plug on the end. the grey plug is virtually identical to the e82 harness with the exception of 5 wires. One of those wires comes from the EDC/sport switch. the others are for a battery sensor, which I will find on the 1 harness, an additional cas wire, secondary air pump and a hot film air mas plug. thankfully the last two are rerouted in the bundle in the e box.

I was successful in getting the white plug finished by using the existing e82 wires and only adding one to go into the car. The grey DME plug is all swapped over.

The next step is chasing down the emissions leak wires into the engine bay. One thing I am grateful for is that i have all my notes for the e box small plugs from my n55 swap it was very helpful.

also didnt really update but i did geth the fuel pumps in. The fuel pump control setup has a 4 wire instead of the e82 2 wire bundle for the main power. The secondary plug has a canbus input fused power and the usual power and ground like the E82.

crazy build! I'm itching to do this swap!!! Are you throwing in the entire m3 suspension as well? I'm pretty much in a limbo right now to do mine. I have all the parts ready, just need to get my driveshaft customized.

I had a complete E90 M3 for the build. Front and rear suspensions are in. I am waiting to get 1m specific Ohlins and springs.

It’s much cheaper with a salvage car, everything that I have no need for I have sold. So far I have about $3200 back from the donor purchase. The 1m specific stuff is expensive because there isn’t a used parts market. I did get lucky and saved a grand on my exhaust so far.

I got a close out supersprint axleback from a large store( no sponsor so no real plug). I am not using the edc because the retrofit is nuts unless I had a coupe for a donor. It would have been a fun harness swap that way.

Right now the goal is to get the car up and running then get off to body/paint then finish with the mundane stuff

So it’s been fun pulling and finding wire placement. All is slowly coming together. The right side engine bay wiring is complete. I have to add the zip ties to hold the fan, headlight, temp sensor wires on the horn.

The large red wire not in the Ebola is for the larger fan. 128’s have a 400w and the s65 has a 850w. I pulled the relat out completely. I also pulled the purple plug because it was no longer needed. There was an auxiliary purple plug that was eliminated, conversely there was place plug added.

For some reason the bundle takes the place of the auxiliary plug wires they seem to make things more complicated. There were 6 wires that were in he plugs that transferred to the DME directly.

Nex move is to get the 3 wires across fron the right to the left side to the cas and frm. I have three plugs, brake vacuum pump and sensor, and fuel pressure to get installed through the fire wall. The dme has 2 wire to install.

With a wiring project like this it's funny how, as you get this deep in, it gets both easier and harder...

Easier as you develop the "big picture" in your head, you start to see how everything pieces together and it all begins to make sense

Harder because of the sheer quantity of things to keep track of... Man, how many pages of notes do you have by now??

I've done a couple of harnes blend jobs, but if we combined both of em together they still wouldn't equal half of what you're dealing with here- my most recent was the result of dropping a 1976 22r into a 1970 Toyota 4x4 replacing a 20r. Wonderful lil' truck, lotsa fun! Anyway, the harness work was stupid easy compared to what you're doing. Just enough that I really appreciate the labor of love you're putting out here.

Good job man- keep after it! The thing we both have in common- one wire at a time, one connection at a time, one sensor at a time and so on... Dozens and more, or just a dozen-ish, it's still one bit at a time

Oh, and yours will be a shit ton more impressive when done
