How Many Miles On Your 128i Water Pump Before It Died?
My car turned 70,000 today. Will do the belt and idler shortly.
How many miles are people getting out of the water pump on their 128i? The water pump on my Cayman S just bit the dust at 41,000 miles. I am a little sore fromt that.

did it die or did you do it preventatively? Plenty on the 135 which suposedly eats them more often. Whe I asked about what to do at 70k I got crickets and a few thoughts. I am hoping to get a bigger sample by narrowing the question to just the water pump.

I am at about 87K miles and my water pump is working fine. I still have the original battery too (but I started carrying cables).

84,000 on mine. Fingers crossed. Doing OFHG this week, and thinking I should do the coolant pump, too. FWIW, my drive is 90% highway, so I'm thinking my pump has it easy.

My commute is 80% highway 15k a year. Water pump, thermostat, hoses, belt - tensioer & rollers, expansion tank and radiator come to about $600 from FCP (rmeuropean has the belt kit for $20 for less, and the expansion tank that FCP doesnt have plus Fuchs anti freeze) Is it worth doing the radiator or not spend $150?

I'm from the E36 and E46 world where radiators, water pumps and expansion tanks etc are a 60k maintenance item.

70,152 miles and my 128i is still running like a new car. Don't think about it on yours until at least 120,000. That's what they tell the E36 and E46 owners. Don't beleive me do a search.
Cayman S had 41,204 when I left the house Saturday. Drove about 12 miles when I had to call a tow because the water pump pulley broke. Probably the bearing seized. $1,200 later and it will have a new water pump and 12 year old idlers and 12 year old hoses. 323Ci had about 83K on it in the summer of 2017 when the expansion tank went from the San Antonio heat. P.O. had it towed and they replaced the tank. Drove it from S.A. to Denver without issue and I had my then 15 yo daughter replace the hoses, t stat, water pump (original bearing was fine), belt and idlers, and radiator at 88k because the parts were cheaper than a tow. YMMV

68k or so on mine. No sign of any problem. At NTB getting new 3 season tires right now. Brake maintenance is probably next. July is my one year ownership anniversary and I'll have put 25k on it by then.

Having owned a E36 M3, E36/7M, and two E46s I did the BMW "cooling system upgrade" at 70,000 miles.
Here is what I replaced in case anyone shives a git. Amazon for a broken box Behr Hella radiator $40 shipped from Amazon - was new, just a messed up box. Looks like someone bought a manual radiator for an automatic, installed it, didn't fill it, found out it wont work and sent it back. rmeuropean.com for the belt/tensioner/idler, Fuchs coolant, and expansion tank fcpeuro.com for the rest Total +-$600 for parts Pierburg made the water pump for BMW - The also made it for my Porsche Cayman S - Made in France Wahler - Borg Warner made the thermostat for BMW Made in Germany Modine made the radiator for BMW Made in Germany I think, Hella Behr replacement made in S Africa The Fuchs expansion tank was made in china. Couldn't find who made it on the one I took out. Rein - Continental hoses were made in turkey. Didn't look for who made the ones I took out. Continental made the serpentine belt for BMW Pretty sure INA made the tensioner and idler. The INA I replaced it with was identical. Took the car to work a few times last week and it drives exactly the same as it did before.

130,000 miles and my pump started throwing codes.
It was a cold, harsh winter so I finally called Uncle and replaced it before it failed on me. Codes went away. YMMV. |

I am amazed at how much longer the water pump lasts on the 128 than the 135...
Mine fried at 50k.
