Aspirated?

What does this mean? What else is there? What does this do to the engine? All comments appreciated.

Aspiration may refer to:
In linguistics:

In technology:
Naturally aspirated engine, an internal combustion engine that relies on atmospheric pressure for air intake, and does not use a supercharger or turbocharger

In the 1 series, the 128 is naturally aspirated whereas the 135 is turbocharged.

Thank you for your replies. I just thought it was a little more than just air intake.

Well it is, as it involves the whole engine design. Engines designed for turbo or super charging have to have different design characteristics than naturally aspirated engines.

Not only that

But there are also different variations of design within the "Aspirated" heading

An engine with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) for example burns differently than one without.
EGR involves sending a portion of the exhaust stream back into the intake, charging the air by using the heat of the exhaust creating a cleaner burn and upping the compression ratio slightly.

I dont know if the 128 has EGR, just making a point.

Garage List
2020 BMW M340i  [0.00]
From: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/aspiration
as·pi·ra·tion   [as-puh-rey-shuhn]
noun
1. strong desire, longing, or aim; ambition: intellectual aspirations.
2. a goal or objective desired: The presidency is the traditional aspiration of young American boys.
3. act of aspirating; breath.

It describes how the engine breathes. It's usually only used in conjunction with naturally for the term naturally aspirated. Which means the engine does not use forced induction.

Forced induction is where a turbocharger or supercharger is used to compress air, and thus force more air into the combustion chamber.

If you need more info I would suggest that you spend some time Googling as there are a lot of sites that are dedicated to explaining how (internal combustion) engines work.

If you still have questions after that, post them up

This post is a prime example of why I love this site. Ask a question and you receive so much useful and helpful information. As some have rightly pointed out there are other references I could have gone for. But I wanted the answer from those that are more knowledgeable with the BMW and in particular the 1er. Thanks to all that responded.

So the 135i is abnormally aspirated?
