I don't think anyone knows yet. Hopefully it will be closer to the 120d than the 135i. The 120d is 330lb lighter than the 135i... That is useful

Hmmn, check this out:
http://www.businessweek.com/autos/co...164_page_2.htm

They don't specify which model, but 3196lb = 1450kg, which is exactly the listed UK weight of the 120d. It seems likely that BusinessWeek pulled this figure out of their rumps... But maybe it's close. It may actually be a smidge high when compared to the bmwusa "unladen" figures, which don't include as much fuel as the UK numbers.

The 0-60 figure of 6.0 sec seems pretty close to reality, if it is indeed a few hundred pounds lighter than the 3er.

3200lbs isn't terrible, although not as light as I'd like to see, we're never going to get sub-3000, so...

I am seriously considering the 128i. The 328 I drove was a fun "reality" ride: we averaged between 26 and 27mpg in mixed driving (including some serious flogging), and it was a revvy little 6... More like the old 325's than the 330's. It did seem to be lacking in torque down low, but I'm driving a boosted 4 now, and we had just driven the 335, so YMMV there. After adjusting, I really enjoyed the 328, and it was more fun (and possible) to play with the limit.

My wife is set to buy a 3er sometime late 2008, and I'd honestly rather go for the N54 in that platform, as it will be the "family hauler."

HTH. I don't think you'll find many folks geeked about the 128, with the stonking fast 135 looming... But I'm sure some are at least seriously considering it.

I also drove a 328i on a test drive by myself. I did really enjoy myself. The engine was silkly smooth. The brakes felt great. People sometimes forget that its the lesser models that put BMW on the map. The 330i just took all the credit. Same will happen with the 1coupe. I will definitely test drive the 128i.

I'll be doing the same; I want to at least give it a chance... especially if the 135i pricing makes me cry.

Glad to hear it, fellas. Personally, I'm more interested in handling and driving dynamics than ultimate speed; it is possible that the 128 will deliver that and be more fun on roads even more so than the 135. Sometimes driving a vehicle as fast as the 135 can be a bit frustrating, to me; constantly holding it back instead of letting it loose.

I'd also consider a 123d, if it were brought over.

The 135i will certainly steal all the thunder, which could make the 128 very attractively priced, too. I can see some of the dealers around here holding the MSRP line for a good long time on a 135i. Maybe not so much with the 128

Well, if you look at the poll thread that asks which one people plan on purchasing, the 135i is by far the more popular choice, but then again, most of the people on this site are enthusiasts; I think that the general public is going to eat up the 128i, so it will be in high demand as well, I think. Just think about all of those rich mommies and daddies who will throw down the $$$ on a 128i for their high school kids.

Totally agree. Most people on BMW forums are not the most typical BMW buyer... 328i with Step and Premium package.

I think the 128i will replace the 328i in that niche, plus add some additional buyers, since it's now more affordable to get their kid in a new BMW.

Until official figures are released, we're going to have to guess... I recall someone posting the weight differences in the engines here, so that would be a start. It's like 75 lbs difference btw the n52 vs. n54 if you believe this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N54 (read the 3rd paragraph)

From the bmw usa website: Figures in [ ] apply to vehicles with automatic transmission

328i coupe 3351 [3417] lbs
335i coupe 3571 [3582] lbs

So you've got 220lbs there...

But the devil is in the details...

The 335i vs. the 328i might not be equipped like the 135i vs. the 128i. We already know that the 135i is going to come with more standard features than just the N54 engine, how much weight those extras add is anyones guess.

Also, we don't know if any "ballast" is being added to the rear of 135i to compensate for the heavier engine to acheive the 50/50 weight distribution, or if the 128i is going to have that ballast added to the front, or if they designed the E82 so that it it would be right in the middle and ballast would be added to both...

The 128 will be lighter than the 135, but only the factory knows by how much.

My WAG (wild ass guess) ?? Maybe 100-200 lbs lighter than the 135i :iono:
