Got home and ....car won't start. Battery charged. Clutch down, key in, hit start and you get a fuel pump sound and nothing. No crank. Put on the charger for a while using under hood posts. Did a load test on the battery after disconnecting terminals. Tests fine. Checked fuse 15 (oil level sensor). Any ideas?

CAS 00A0B4 which I read is that it sent a start signal but it did not see an engine start. I am going to pull cowls and see if I can smack it with something to see if it starts. I am thinking a starter is in my future.

Traitor.
But, nice car, have fun with that turbo. I'll be reliably puttering around in N/A land, until my intake gets installed...

Well she starts now. NAPA sells a reman Bosch with a 2 year warranty. $145.00. I filled a 9' x 2' motorcycle lift from end to end with parts to get to it. Whew...that is a lot of crap to dig through to get to the little starter. Probably spent 4 or 5 hours but could do again in 2 now. Got a Manifold Absolute Pressure code but no CEL......I shouldn't have run codes....ignorance is bliss. I checked my connections again and found one a little loose. The other connections are harder to get to. Will drive it a day or two and see if it comes back. Damn this exhaust sounds great......

Of course as soon as I love that exhaust my car sells.
It will be going to a new to BMW car enthusiast here in Virginia probably next week once checks and titles all get to where they need to go.... So.... What is next? Unicorn hunting. M sport, 128i, Manual, Koral interior, light color (White, Silver...no black) exterior, minimal mods, no sunroof, no idrive, no power seat if possible. I don't ask for much.....

Car went to the new owner on Tuesday.
He knows about the site here and has joined. Land Rover LR4 came home today to replace the X5 another driver totaled while my son was in it. Searching for a 128i msport manual coupe.

Wait, why did you sell it only to look for another 1 series?

So I put the 135 on the market and now I wait and search. I'll find the right one eventually. I am seriously torn between finding the non black, koral interior, stripper, slicktop, 0 option M sport and one with everything. My old 128 sport was loaded and I loved it but I think the purity of the stripper may be the draw for me. I can get my luxury elsewhere. Not much else to cross shop the 128 with its style (especially the interior with its simple perfection), function and handling. Cross shop cars with Compact footprint, NO turbo, classy interior, 2+2 seating, RWD only, manual, non asian cuts out a ton of cars. Less than 30K Basically older M3 (really too much HP in the E92s but e46 maybe) ZHP e46s would work. Porsche 997 are getting really close price wise (maybe a Cayman). HP is a bit much but for Porsche I'd live with it. 996 interiors are godawful hideous and intolerable. 964's are going stratospheric. I'd should have bought an old aircooled 911 10 years ago.... Mustang? Drove one and loved it. Interior alone rules it out. Feels huge. Nice chassis and motor but too much HP. Not much else comes to mind... I still think the 128i is the perfect car for me...

Sorry to hear about your son!! Hope he's ok and the car did it's job protecting him.
As for your criteria: compact, no turbo, classy interior, 2+2, RWD, manual, non-asian... that's certainly cutting out a lot of incredible drivers cars out there. I'd consider an e36 M3. They're definitely attainable in your price range and are not too high on power at all. Also about the same size as a 1er. What about the z3/z4's?

The Z's....while I love them...are too small. E36 M3 would likely work too.... The X5 did a perfect job of protecting both occupants. Amazing technology.

And I highly recommend you to go try an e36 M3 before you settle on another 128. I think you'll find yourself pleasantly surprised by the platform, for what you're looking for.

How about a 2006 e46 M3? I have always thought that our the e82 model shares more in common with the e46 than 2002.

Yeah it would make the list. Have to research engine issues. Always like the cars. Great sound.

128i is a for all intensive purposes a modern e36 M3 with more airbags, bluetooth, but no LSD. They're both around the same size, weight, and power. If it's a weekend driver, I'd look at them equally. As a daily driver, it's nice to have something a touch safer and more reliable in an e82. I had an E36 M3 for 8 years before ordering a 6MT e92 335i new and didn't really care for it. After a year or so I found a 6MT 128i as quickly as I could and feel right at home now. Alas, it may be time to move it on with my recent e91 acquisition. |

Great cars. Classic BMW M3 with a straight (non turbo) putting out 338 HP. I don't believe it has engine issues (other than bmw standard leaky gaskets from time to time. As they age the rear subframe wears and often needs to be swapped out.

US E46 M3 made 333hp. European E46 M3 made 338hp. The E46 M3 CSL made 17hp more than the European E46 M3. Not that horsepower means everything. It doesn't. With a car like this, there's definitely so much more to it than just hp. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M3
