Well, certainly, this is a case of "to each his own", but FWIW, as a guy mostly trapped on what passes for roads in Chicago...
Loved my 997.1 GT3 until my instructor rolled us and totaled it at Blackhawk Raceway 6 mos in. Threw myself a wife acceptable E92 M3 bone which I never really liked much (as OP notes, too heavy and only a mere shadow of the liveliness of the GT3 engine). Then got 1M and found the perfect mate! Under the radar, crazy lively if you want it to be (yes, I have spun it in the wet, but at a safer track!). On the wait list and offered the GT4, but they let me drive one and decide not to take it and having now driven a friend's several times, know I made the right decision. Without a doubt, the GT4 handles better and is easier to drive fast, but I still think the 1M is the best I have ever driven for making everyday driving fun (though I don't actually drive with snow or salt, as tempting as that is...). GTI is fun in its own way for the winter!
