thanks for the DIY! +1 on more pics! i got a few questions, all you other guys that have installed this trunk please chime in on these too:
1. noticed it was raining in your pics, did the new cf trunk seal up like stock? was there any water leaking into the trunk? 2. for the roundel, what is the stock piece held on by? double sided tape? and how did you get it to adhere to the new trunk? iCarbon told me to not drill the holes for the nipples on the trunk but to instead cut off the nipples and use 3m tape to adhere it. (just want to get a feel how everyone else is doing it) 3. when drilling the extra holes needed, what kind of drill and bit did you use? (for both fiberglass parts and cf) |

+1 to the drill bits but im a bit unsure about using double sided tape for the badge.
I might see if I can get some bmw tape that they use on the spoiler

Nice write-up. So this requires the stock emblem?

The e82 has a unique trunk badge in that it is curved which is why no one exists. Possibly it could be diffrent with a csl trunk but I dont think the basic shape has changed that much.

I have drilled holes in CF before (to attach a custom CF front splitter to my dedicated track car project ) and to do that I used a Carbide drill bit. They can be purchased at your local Mom&Pop hardware store or the Big ones that sponsor NASCAR and the like. The Carbide drill bit looks like a mini spade shovel. The key, IMO, is to make sure you have a decent drill that walks (turns) slowly and not a $9.99 Craftsman special that only has two speeds -- off and full blast! At slow turning (drilling) speed and just the slightest amount of pressure it is amazing IMO that little spade shovel looking Carbide drill bit goes through CF like a hot knife through butter. Duck Tail Height?
OP, I screen scraped your image (hope you don't mind) and doctor'd it in a lame attempt to illustrate my request further (see attached). Can you measure the height of the iCarbon CF trunk "Duck Tail" from the highest (center) part of the spoiler down to the flat recessed part of the rear bumper? I am curious to know how much taller (if at all) the iCarbon CF trunk "Duck Tail" is over the BMW Performance CF Rear Spoiler, which I already have. It certainly looks aggressive, which I like; however, since I already have the BMW Performance CF Rear Spoiler, if it is not taller than what I already have then that makes the decision even tougher.
Thx... Last edited by Sk8fe; 01-06-2011 at 08:38 AM.. Reason: Attached image. |

With out struts the hood travels a bit further back than oem and combined with the weight of the duck tail it creates a center of gravity far back enough that you have to pull it fairly far to shift it to where it wants to close.
I would not, however, fling it open as it could cause damage to the fiberglass. With two struts you could have used it as a catapult (we flung a tennis ball about a hundred feet which was a bad idea for the trunk but it wasnt a problem) and with one strut still could knock your teeth out if you stood over it. The hood I didnt even attempt to have with one let alone two struts. The hood explodes open when you pop it because of the spring so I couldnt imagine using a single strut. I will get a broom handle and wrap it in black/yellow/red tape for the track
