Is this RFT able to survive?
I'm not an expert on these crappy RFT's. I need someone's opinion. Is this tire completely out of commission?

Is it a manufacturing defect, or did something happen?

You just need to monitor it very frequently. If it get's bigger you have to take it off immediately.

If you got the tire/wheel insurance, it'll be replaced!
If not, you said it all, a "slow leak." That's no bueno, IkeaBoy!

I won't have to hold my breath every time I go over a slight bump in the road. At least if I damage a Hankook, it'll be cheaper to replace. |

I just noticed the same bump on my front passenger tire. Is it safe to drive? I have service scheduled for next Thursday after work. I would drive it about 100 miles that day (to work then from work to the dealer). I have the tire and wheel warranty. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hmmm...tough call. Chances are, you'll be fine. It would take another hit at or around that spot to blow. Sidewalls are stiff enough to hold at speed even with a tear. When the RFTs blow, the stiff sidewall keeps it from being too dramatic. I blew my RF at about 65 MPH, the car was barely disturbed, the only indicator was the tire pressure light.
I'd lean toward "you'll be fine" I won't recommend either, but assess the risk on what types of roads and speeds you'll be traveling. Can assume BMW won't cover a tow for that. |

poke a nail on the tire. That would guarantee you replacement under warrranty. One of the sales rep told me that. |

Wow... I need to give mine a good look.
I've hit some gnarly bumps here the last week or so (Chicago doesn't have all of its winter holes patched yet) and for the other two years I've owned the car I banged it pretty good on some of the streets around LA. I guess I'm lucky that I haven't ever had a bulge like that on mine.... Seems to happen frequently. *shrug* |
