BMW 1-Series as Sporty Three-Door

At the upcoming Geneva Motor Show BMW will release the sporty three-door variant of the current 1-Series model which so far was available as a five-door only.

The three-door’s side doors are larger, and the B-pillars are set further back within the wheel-base. The pictured prototype has no disguise, and judging from the double exhaust pipes the car is equipped with a 3.0 litre six cylinder fuel engine delivering about 250 HP.

The 1-Series three-door model is expected to be in the dealerships from summer 2006 on.

Looks better as a 2/3 door than a 4/5 door. I like it. This will give the VW Golf (my car) some competition!

I have to say I wasn't a big fan of the 4 door hatchback, but it grew on me like a lot of BMW's newer designs. This new 2 door hatchback is looking even better. It's too bad we don't have this car in the US I would love to test drive one cause from the magazine reviews Ive read this is one fun drive.

Hello Everyone- I'm new to this forum...I came across it doing a Google search...which seems to be the digital pathway for many of us.
I am a serious fan of the 1&2 series in all the variants and disguises. Like other people on the forum I've owned Audi's and BMW's...current car is a Z4 that I love...

Anyway...the pic is a new thinly disguised (note the fake door-handle decal on the rear doors) 1 series 3-door. I think you get a better feeling for the proportions since the picture is taken without a zoom lens.

Again-hello to all. I hope to be an active and reasonably behaved new member!

Although I'm 99% sure this is indeed the 1 series 3 door, I've heard that BMW is testing the 2 series using 1 series mules...
which might explain the large front fascia. You can clearly see the phony door lines and doorhandle in this side view.
GCZ website says that the 2 series will have sportier steering and suspension settings than the 1 series.
For me, all the speculation just adds fuel to the fire in regards to my anticipation of these cars.
I love the wheels on this- BMW seems to be the only car company who's very aware of side profile design-
ie, other car companies seem to emphasize the front and rear.
The 1 series 3 door has a gorgeous shoulder line that adds so much beefy character to what is a very small car.
No fear of emasculation with this guy.

That's an interesting theory. But maybe the painted door/handles are there just to disguise it as the 5-door?

Yes, that's probably the reason- I just wanted to slip in some news that's floating around of the 2-series being tested in urban settings while being disguised as 1-series.

Says Enilab right? Haha, I love that guy. I think he is a gorilla marketer for BMW as his information is always very accurate.

Let us hope he is right as this car (the 2 series or 3-door 1) better be over here by the end of next year so that I can buy it :headbang:.

Interesting.
Enilab- yes that's him. & I think you've got him pegged.
His threads on GCZ sometimes read like ad copy from BMW...but he is a fount of information that
seems to be pretty much accurate.
There's another guy also on these German car sites...Scott 26... who seems to have inside track BMW info- tho he can sometimes be a bit didactic.
But photoshops, mules and rumors are what we have right now.

Did he happen to specifically mention whether BMW will name the coupe the "2-series coupe" or "1-series coupe"??

I'm still confused as to this whole 1-series/2-series nomenclature stuff.

No he did not specifically, though I would put my money on 2-series since it will be significantly different than the 3 and 5 door 1 series. Just a guess though :iono: .

2-series coupe/cabrio...no 1-series coupe/cabrio.
Also, next-gen 1&2-series will be engineered for x-Drive as an option.
x-Drive n/a current generation including upcoming 2-series since it's built off of the 1-series platform...which, apparently, can't accomodate BMW's AWD system.
But this isn't confirmed by BMW...it's just talk from a source some believe has inside information.

Chris Chapman's sketch for the 1-series 3-door

found this at GCF.com. I believe Chapman is also the lead designer for the X-series.
