MAINTENANCE COST FIRST 4 YEARS?

Hi All:

can anyone advise, or has a link to a BMW website, on the total estimated regularly scheduled maintenance cost for the 1st 4 years?

I think some of you may know where I'm going with this.....if in fact, my beloved 135 costs more than the 35k base I was expecting, I'll be doing some reconciling in my mind by deducting those maintenance costs...

Thanks

sorry guys, I worded my question confusingly....

What would the total estimated regularly scheduled maintenance cost be if it wasnt free maintenance?

Knowing this estimated cost and comparing the savings by having BMWs outstanding $0 maintenance cost vs let's say, Infiniti, which i already know what 4 years of maintenance will be. I can deduct this from bottom line comparison

The way I looked at it. My current car costs me ~ 3k every year (Audi frustration). So 4 years means 12k towards the 135i.

well the question is what kind of oil do they use? synthetic? I'd say this highly depends on how much you travel. Let say an avg of 15k/yr, that's 60k for 4 years. 60k maintance is about 300-500. 30k is about 200-300, oil change every 3k miles (30 / oil change) brake pads change (probably kinda expansive since these are six piston, so i'd say 250 for all four corners) Added all up 500+300+30*20+250 = 1650. Iono if this is accurate but if you replace clutch or rotors, it would go up considerably.

The maintenance "warranty" that BMW offers is 4 years/50k miles, whichever comes first. It includes oil/filters, microfilters, brake pads/rotors/fluid, wiper blades, and engine belts. The interval between services varies depending on how you drive your car, but tends to occur every 9-12k miles on average (depending on worse/better driving conditions, the service countdown will be faster/slower). Costs for service will vary depending on which dealership you go to; there is no set price for all dealers (labor/parts prices may vary). They won't have exact price quotes available now, but call up your dealer and ask how much it is for an oil service, inspection 1, and inspection 2 for a 335 (the order of service goes oil service, insp 1, oil service, insp 2, oil service, insp 1...) Add up four or five of those costs and that should give you a rough ballpark of how expensive a 135 would be to maintain for four years.

BMW oil is 5W30 synthetic (M cars use a different "motorsport" grade). BMW will NOT pay for an oil change every 3k miles; it can only be done if the car is within 500 miles due of service per the indicator. Anything above and beyond that comes out of your own pocket.

Again, this varies from dealer to dealer (depending on how nice they are), but I do not believe clutches are covered under any factory warranty (if they are nice, they may goodwill some or all of the cost).

I've had a really good experience with BMW clutches. 150k of hard miles on 328ci without a clutch replacement, and its still smooth as sillk.

Thanks for the info, which was exactly what I was looking for....basically, compared with any car I'm looking to buy, i can reconcile to deduct about $1600-1800 in maintenance costs when looking into the 135.....

Isnt there a big 15k maintenance whereby they do more than the standard oil change?

so the 135 @ 40k is actually costing me $38,400

the BMW maintenance $0 program is outstanding and IMO should not be overlooked prior to making your final decision about whether or not to get a 135 if the prices are slightly higher than expected.....

If, on any other comparable car, "routine" maintenance for first 4 years =X (prob 2k), you should consider it as part of cost of ownership, and ultimately, total price of car.....

isnt it great how I'm beginning to justify this purchase in my mind, mentally preparing myself for perhaps a disappointing base price....

Not when BMW plans the oil change intervals for every 15k miles. You will get an oil change (oil service) at 15k and 45k, and an oil change and brake fluid flush at 30k (inspection 1). The wheels are staggard so no tire rotation, and BMW uses "lifetime fill" fluids everywhere else.

I realize what you are saying though. I was a technician for Lexus a few year back. They got oil change and rotate every 5k, plus transmission/differential fluid at 15k, and all that plus new coolant, thermostat, and brake fluid flush at 30k. Lexus (Toyota) did not believe in synthetic oil or lifetime fill fluids. I guess there is a reason I see so many old Toyotas running around.

Yeah every company seems to be stretching out things more now...Mitsu. says every 6,000kms(~3,700 miles) for oil in the Galant...the wife's new Tribute is 8,000kms(~5,000 miles) according to Mazda, and then the BMW salesguys said 24,000 kms(~15,000 miles) I nearly crapped my pants...yeah it's synthetic oil...but that still seems a long time for a filter to go...:iono:

Oh well, that's what warranty is for I guess...

Of course he did mention that if I wanted I could get them done at 12,000 km intervals..but then I pay for the extra one

4 yrs/ 50k free maintenance and bumper to bumper warranty

free brake pads and rotors. bmw replaces rotors and does nto turn them. free oil changes and tune-ups

so when the 1 series becomes a CPO vehicles it is 7 yrs/ 100k for powertrain warranty. on top of the remaining factory

I agree and plan to change mine every 5k in my garage. 15k isn't bad if you drive the car like my wife does. Oil and filter technology has improved dramatically in just the last 5 years, so it's not surprising BMW has the interval that they do. However, if your car is going to be seeing any track time or auto crossing a 5k interval is much better.

so the BMW free maintenance oil change interval is 15k?.....lets say i choose every 5k....will BMW cover that?....I dont think any car, new technology or not, should go more than 5k w/o an oil change....

No, you have to pay if you want it at 5k. Since BMW uses synthetic oil I'd change it at 7.5k and let BMW pay for every other oil change. Modern cars require so little maintenance in the first 4 years that BMW's "free maintenance" probably doesn't amount to much money. My Accord probably cost me about $750 in maintenance in the first 60k miles.

With BMW's 4yr/50k mile free maintenance program you'll probably get 3-4 oil changes, a couple of air filters, a brake fluid change and maybe some brake pads. Not a huge amount of money.

I think theres also major maintenance recommendations at 30k and i think 60k that would ordinarily be big $ that go far beyond just an oil change....of course these are included as well....the Infiniti 30k service is like $400
