Run Flat Mileage

I currently have stock Goodyear Eagle NCT 5 run flats with 18,500 miles on em. It looks like they are in line for at least another 10,000 or so miles. Is this good tire life for these or is it normal. I am always reading how run flats dont last too long. I certainly do my share of aggresive driving. And we do have very good road conditions here in Vegas. Any thoughts out there?

I am waiting to wear these out before upgrading to non run flats but its taking forever to wear these things out.

You are a lucky man. My first set of tires only lasted 10,000 miles.

Didn't know these were "stock" for a 1 series, but that's a touring tire, which means the treadwear is much better than the stock performance summer tires most people refer to. I had the stock turanza RFTs on my 325 and those things lasted forever.

I was pleasantly surprised by the combination of ride, handling and wear on the OEM NCT 5s on my '08 128i convertible. Unfortunately, with the staggered sizes, you cannot rotate so my rears had to be replaced at 24,000 miles (down to 2~3/32") but there was a shortage of 225/45R17 stock at that time. (The fronts would have lasted at least another 15~20k miles.)

As it would have cost me $700 to replace only the two rears, I opted for four non RFT Conti DWS performance all-seasons - for $600 out the door. The ride is greatly improved, both dry and wet traction is still very good and I have the option of driving the car more in the winter. The only downside was tossing two good front tires and a slightly more mushy feeling while cornering - largely corrected by adding 3 psi to the stock pressures.

With a tread rating of 240, 28,000 miles is good, but not really exceptional for these tires - but I notice that Tire Rack does not list the 225/45R17 size for the NCT5s, so it looks like you'll have to replace the entire set when the rears wear out as I did.

Since you're running on non-runflats, do you carry a spare in the trunk or a can of fix-a-flat+air compressor?

Howzit HISI808. Im a born and raised in Hawaii guy who is working in Vegas now. I have the mobility kit from BMW in my trunk. I cant wait to upgrade to non runflats. I am looking at either Advan AD08's or Dunlop Direzza Z1 star specs. Any thoughts on which is better? Also, if I change rims, what the largest and widwst tire and rim size I can put on my car? On a different note, I was back home last week in Honolulu. Is it just me or are the roads really bad back there.

I'm about to change mine at 25k miles, but I did 1.5 days of DE events.

Edit: I should clarify that there's still tread on the rears (seems opposite to most). It's the passenger-front tire that is at the wear bars. The driver-front isn't far behind. Rears probably have another 3k miles.

Aloha 808@702,

Sorry but I am not a tire/rim offset/width expert by any means. I suggest you do a forum search for the rims you want to buy and I'm sure someone else has already bought them and figured out the correct offsets and tire combinations.

I agree with you, the roads here are terrible! Potholes, tons of road construction, steel plates, uneven road surfaces everywhere.

I plan on getting a set of Advan RZ's when my run-flats wear out. Biggest I am willing to go is 18 inches for fear of bending a rim if I hit a pothole. I plan to pair these with either a set of Yokohama S drives or Hankook V12's.

Compressor + a dynaplug kit. I carry a compressor in my other BMW which still has RFTs as well - on the principle that inflating the punctured tire may avoid further damage and permit the tire to be safely repaired.
