BMW Dealers and notices we have M1's now
Has anyone else gotten a letter from your local dealer saying come in for so BMW trained professionals can work on you M1?
this just supports my theory the people that work for the dealers are not car people...

Also on the BMW Mobility Card: "Model: M1 Cou"
"Why was the 1 Series M Coupe not given the "M1" designation? According to Dr. Kay Segler, the managing director of BMW M GmbH at the time of the 1 Series M Coupe's introduction, the "M1" designation could never be used again, as it would remain exclusive to the mid-engined sports car that BMW Motorsport produced between 1978 and 1981. BMW M therefore settled on "1 Series M Coupe" as the official model name, though several alternative designations were considered but ultimately rejected." I just emailed them but most likely nothing will happen.
I will speak to the GM next time I am at the dealer. Not going out of my way to correct them as they should know.

God the M1 is such a gorgeous car. The 1M is equally as beautiful.
I'm somewhat not surprised, people that type those things out for the dealership are usually as clueless as the pretty girl sitting at the front customer support counter. |

I have oficial documents from Munich, BMW Headquarters from the time of purchase defining the car either as M Coupe or M1...so maybe BMW was not that much against calling the E82 M as M1 but they just couldn't dare to take risks with a relatively cheap and yet unproven (at the time) experimental car vs. their legendary supercar of the old times. They would never advertise our car as M1 but as long as it was the M version of 1 series it simply was (and still is) the M1...of E82 platform. I don't see it as a big deal when people call the car M1, neither I am getting flattered.

Just to be clear I am not upset about the name. My understanding from all the documents I have seen it is called the 1M because of heritage reasons. If it is not the case then I am in error and I have egg on my face. Just going with what I have seen is the "proper" designation.

I wanted to be sure of what I posted a few minutes before and checked my file that I keep all original documents of the car. This is a Euro spec car. I ordered it when I was in Turkey, where I was about to leave and asked them to deliver it in Chile when it was built, my next destination at the time and actual residence. I took delivery of the car in Santiago on 29th of October, 2011.
The "diplomatic" price list as well as the pro-forma invoice of the car are saying it is a "M Coupe" as well as the bill of lading. Not a single document goes far enough to call it a 1 series M Coupe or E82 M Coupe or a 1M etc. However, there is one fundamental document, the EC Certificate of Conformity issued by BMW M GmbH, it includes all legally necessary technical specs of the car and that particular document literally reads as follows: ...hereby certifies that the vehicle....section 0.4, Vehicle category: M1 That is THE document together with invoice which was needed to register and import it to Chile and will be always needed in future as well, as long as I keep the car and continue moving from one place to another. Not a big deal like I said but it is there so maybe this designation is elsewhere in BMW data banks which could lead to occasional sight of "M1" in addition to usual ignorance, indifference and misery of most BMW dealers. Don't bother too much about the name. "135is Competition Pack", "135is+", "135 GT", "M CSKL" (M Coupé Sport Kein Leichtbau), "M1.7320508" (M + square root of 3), etc.: it's the car that matters and all the fun it generates.
For most yearning for a 1M, 1M = wann'em...

I'm rather coming to like the fact that no one quite knows what to call it. I use 1M, but M Coupé seems as graceful if not moreso. I do rather like M Pyrat, but it seems a bit pretentious when explaining to friends and family just what I have recently done (bought the car that is).
After having driven BMWs for the better part of the last 40 years, I have to say that whatever we call it, this car is the most fun I've ever had sitting up. |
