Service info says 1700miles or 3/2010 for my first scheduled service. WTF?

I never really paid attention to the display until recently, since I turned over 15,000 miles last week.

I currently have 15,100 miles or so. Why does it think I still have another year before my first scheduled service? Yes, the clock is set correctly!
I assume it'll go by mileage if that comes up first, but still, in 1700 miles I'll have 16,800 miles on the car. Isn't that a wee bit past the 15k service interval? Apparently I have to wait for the "service" indicator to display before they'll honor the free warranty service.

I did my own oil change at 6500 miles so I'm not as concerned about the oil turning to sludge though.

What gives!

you are correct. the free service will be performed when the service indicator says so, or once per year, whichever comes first. My first service was with 13,8xx miles. some have gone 17,xxx until their cars indicated it's time...

OK, fair enough, I guess my car knows best. But if I'd known it was going to be 17k miles for my first service, I would've done a second oil change around 11k.

But the "once per year" think gets me, since the date listed (3/2010) is a full TWO years after purchase.

Then you have other folks like the guy who just started a thread saying his car changed its own oil.

IIRC, a few years ago, when BMW started including a time based free oil change for those who don't drive at least 15k or so per year, the time interval was two years. Although it was quickly changed to one year, apparently some 1er programmer didn't get the message.

I changed mine myself at 1200mi and 7500, and will continue to do so every 7500, and get a free one inbetween. Whatever you're comfortable with, changing early will only hurt the wallet...

It all depends on how you drive. The car will push your serviced date later if your gentle on the car or earlier if your a little heavy oin the throttle. My car is at 10200 and it says 4700 miles to go to service. Apparently i'm a slower than average driver...although my speeding ticket would beg to differ...

The Atlanta gas crunch took its toll... I drove the car like it was on eggshells for a couple of months.

I guess I have to start driving a lot harder if I want to get it serviced sooner!

From poking around with my BT scan tool I've learned the engine has oil viscosity sensors that can detect how worn out your oil is, in addition to the oil level sensor. There are four or five trackable variables, in fact. If you change your oil outside the free service interval, I imagine it'd make the free service interval longer.

My indicator suggests next service appt should be in 05/09. What's the earliest I can come in, now? (basically April which is a month earlier) Have under 3K miles, though that should not matter as the 1yr anniversary will come first.

computer on my car

says 17000 mile to go for the 1st oil change with now 8000 miles I put on the car.
So, the computer also tell what month/year for the next oil change? I'll check. I wonder 1 year mark is counted as car built date/ED pick up/redelivery time?

Based on my stamp is it taking 1 yr from delivery month (i.e. in customer possession). Makes sense as you can have cars sitting on lots for months, so it won't count that time.
