Help! Please! Overheating!

So over the weekend, out of no where, I was driving my car for maybe about 15 minutes or so and I get the Temp gauge on saying ENGINE IS TOO HOT (or something like that) and it starts to go into limp mode and I could barely give it any gas. Not even 5 minutes later it would say ENGINE OVERHEATING and then I wouldn't be able to give it gas PERIOD. The car just shuts off. My coolant looks fine and I don't have any leaks. Any possiblity it could be the Water pump?

2008 135i
coming up on 60k
all bolt ons and JB4

Any input is appreciated! thank you!

Read the codes that you got, but it sounds like your water pump just took a dump. I wouldn't drive the car anymore and just have it towed to the dealer to prevent any further damage.

At 60k all bets are off with BMW water pumps, its ridiculous how long theyve had high failure rates with these damn things. But ya, methinks your water pump is in a slumber from which it wont recover. Tow truck time, better safe than sorry.

Water pump possibly, if it occurred randomly like you stated, don't drive it tow it to the shop!

Long story, but about 2 months after I got my 2011 135i, I took it to an autocross and it started overheating. It wound up at the dealer for around 3 weeks (they gave me a 335i loaner), and they replaced the water pump (which didn't fix it), the radiator/sensors (which didn't fix it), and the thermostat, which fixed the problem. It's been fine ever since. The N55 was new at the time, and most of the delay was caused by parts availability.

Sounds like a bad waterpump/thermostat. Time to go see the pros.

if you drove the car overheating long enough for it to literally shut off, my bets are on the motor is toast lol

Just so everyone knows, i fixed the car, it was the waterpump. I changed out the pump and the thermostat since you might as well, they're connected to each other. lol. can't really take off the pump without taking off the thermostat. The process was quick. I was able to do the pump, thermostat and take my downpipes off(since there's more room now) in about 4 hours. I have my own shop so this was done on the lift. But def a pretty quick fix. the waterpump alone calls out for 3.5-4 hours. The vehicle is fixed and I traded it in

Traded it in because of unforeseen repairs? IMO, the waterpump is probably the worst that could happen to this car at that mileage as everything else is pretty solid.

What car did you end up getting?

That is probably the water pump, coolant is fine but engine is overheat, send it to the shop and check it.

Not true. When my fan took a crap on the way home from work i had just pulled into a drive thru. Yellow overheat followed by red overheat within 5 minutes. I thought i was going to have to get out and push the car. It didn't shut itself off, but with pedal to the floor it would barely move. I don't think its possible to continue driving the car if its overheating. It just won't let you...

So I just had the SAME ISSUE as all of you are talking about, I am at 45k miles and my car out of nowhere cautioned me with high heat and with pimp mode.

I have taken the car to the dealership (towed for free through BMW RSA, and I even had it towed to cavier bmw a dealership 30 miles away, not my local one, because it has better reviews) and they said it was the water pump so I am getting it replaced under warranty, they gave me a lame loaner though, a 328i, ( should get a 335i at least! lol )

I am picking it up today after work and hoping all is good, I will drive around the dealership for 15 minutes to make sure that the car isn’t still heating up, Last thing I want is to get stuck on the freeway on my way home from the dealership.

ugh and THEN my third brake light fucking fell off! and they won’t replace it under the extended warranty. I just got this car 2 months ago!!

ahhhh Frustration !!!!

damn, two months ago? fucccckkkk. I feel your pain. haha. I loved the car, but man i was tired of having all them issues. especially with the wastegate rattle, waterpump, the third brake light breaking off, AND my gas door always breaks and just doesn't closes! at one point i was worried if the car would even make it past 100k -_-

I traded my car in for a toyota tacoma. its hella BEAST. love it. haaha. not as fast as the 135i but its more practical for me anyways. I live in WA and usually do alot of backpacking during the summer and snowboarding during the winter so it does work. haha.

JUST TO LET YOU GUYS KNOW, I HAVE DOWNPIPES AND JB4 FOR SALE. 500 FOR THE SET!

by the time you get to the red overheating symbol. you can't even step on the gas anymore. it just dies.

I'm on my third third brake light. First one cracked in several places, second one cracked and then literally fell out somewhere on the road. Parked my car, saw it was gone, was like wtf, gotta be kidding me! Third one has been fine since installed maybe
2 years ago. I think there was a SIB for them cracking and they changed something to correct the problem. I remember my SA saying it was very common.

actually this is very common with older BMW too. 60K is actually pretty good on these cars.

Trying switching these bad boys out every 40k miles on e39 and every 80k do a full overhaul of the whole coolant system cause everything is plastic.

Even on M roadster with the S52 engine have the water pumps go out very often. I see this more as preventative maintenance than a problem with the car. I am watching my temp in my e82 like a hawk, getting close to the big 40k number.
