Erratic idle on cold start (N54 135i)
Noticed the following occasionally during cold starts:
1. RPM dips down to around 650 rpm then rises back up around 900 then settles at 800 There is oil leaking near the spark plugs—assuming I need a valve cover gasket replacement. Is that a bolt missing too? Car has ~58k miles 2010 with intercooler, chargepipe, and new 3.5mm vacuum lines. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Hey Semja,
The RPM moving all over the place on cold start is normal. my car will start at 1100 and go down to 650 then back to 800 once its past its "cold start" phase. I could be wrong but its normal for RPM to move around on cold starts on N54. Definitely looks like you are leaking oil from the valve cover gasket so i would get that fixed as soon as you can. No bolt is missing. That spot is for the tow hook which is used when pulling the engine from the car. Cheers, Antonio |

Your valve cover is probably cracked. It starts at the seam for the PCV system right behind the oil cap and works downwards towards the head. It will cause a rough idle, especially on cold start.
