Convertible Roof tear

Hi,
I am the "happy" owner of a 2008 128 convertible. I started to notice 2 weeks ago what seems to be the beginning of a tear in the fabric of the roof. When I examined the location of the tear with the roof half-folded I noticed that there was a small plastic part rubbing exactly where the tear had started. I just wanted to community if any other convertible owner was experiencing the same issue. Thanks!

My top still looks perfect but post where on the roof you're looking so we can check.

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback received so far.
When I took the car to the dealer 2 weeks ago they took pictures that they were supposed to send to BMW Canada. I am still waiting to hear from the dealer... I will take some pics and post them before the end of the week.

Here are the pics

Hi,
Here are the pics. The little plastic hook in the first pic seems to rub against the exact the same spot were the tear (whitish spot in second pic).
My main concern is that each time I bring down the top I may be increasing the size of the tear.

No rubbing on mine so far with 13,000 miles. How many miles (or kilometers) on yours?

And definitely keep us posted as to BMW's response.

Interesting. My car was in for service Mid May and they said there was a service bulletin for a part in the roof that will make it bow and they replaced some part. I will try to find my paperwork and post. just ask you SA if there are any technical bulletins on the roof.

I believe that bulletin/recall addresses a different top issue covered in this thread:

Convertible Top Warp?

Ouch - I have a small whitish spot very similar to yours. I'll have to take a closer look. I never would have noticed it at this point without your post.

i have a place on my top (Zed) where the top was rubbing the rubber gasket on the back. kinda a shame, but not really a big deal once i spotted it. hopefully you can get yours corrected before anything comes of it.

Damn. I looked at my top today. While I don't think there's a "hole" yet, there is a worn spot like that on the driver's side. It definitely feels more flexible when I rub it there with my finger compared to the areas directly around it.

I guess I should find some time and take it in for a look-see soon. Particularly as the top is coming down just about daily now.

Yep - looks like I've got this bug too.

I haven't poked my camara in, but you can feel a bend in the material from the inside.

If you look close you can see the threads on the moonlight top are bent a bit.

With the fine weather we've had in the last 3 months, I've been lowering and raising the top with every drive.

Amazing! Montreal - I'm having the exact same issue - drivers side, same spot - three little rub marks and the fabric feels a bit thinner. I have less than 3,700 miles on mine, but I do put the top down frequently. I've also have wrinkles in the top back quarters by my window on both sides but I've got over them. I just don't want a hole from this rubbing piece - I guess they'll just put a patch on it. I can't imagine they'd replace the top unless it rips wide open. Anybody know?

I have the same issue now that you have pointed it out.. Mine is on my passenger side which is your drivers side.

Assuming the mechanism is the same regardless of right or left hand drive..

Will have a better look in the morning. Thanks for the insight into this defect..

Mine is driver's side. I assumed it would be the same on both sides because it would be likely that they both rub on the same spot. There's no sign of it on the passenger side.

And I think I'd be pissed if they gave me a patch for something that was a defect in the car. It's a year old car, barely 11K miles on it. It should look new, not patched. But now I'm also worried about how much of the car they'd have to take apart to replace the top - would they find my SmarTop module?

I'd probaby remove it before bringing it in. You never want to give them a reason to deny a claim.

If it was a wear point I would definitely push for a new roof.

Given how much of a hassle it was to install (guess you haven't read the threads about disassembling my back seat), I'll wait to find out what replacing the top entails first.

I have had my top replaced because of a faulty rear defrost. Takes about 2 to 3 days as there are a lot of moving parts and wires attached. The re-alignment process probably takes one day by itself.

If they are taking it apart they'll probably find your mod.

Hi All.
I am presently on a trip in Europe but before leaving BMW wanted to book an appointment to check the problem. I am really surprised to learn how many of you seem to have a similar problem! The worst part in my case is that my roof was already changed 2 months after I bought my car due to the roof warp issue also reported on this forum. Please if you are noticing the same problem could you post some pictures. Thanks again for the feedback.
