5w-40 for 135i

Hey guys I wanted to know what was the difference between 5w-30 and 40?? I don't know what I had in it when I first got the car, but after my oil change with the 5w-40my car seems a bit slower and my car just won't take off as fast.. Could this be due to the 5w-40??

Well, the most obvious difference is the viscosity...

In other words, the thickness (or better yet, resistance to flow) of the oil at a certain temperature. Using the wrong oil could mean you are offering less protection to your engine's components or causing unnecessary resistance.

Why would you be using any oil that's not approved or within spec for your engine? Reminds me of people who try to run $1-a-Quart non-synthetic oil in their Bimmers. These are not Honda Civics... lol

BMW recommends using "BMW Synthetic 5w-30" as an approved oil / viscosity. If you are using Mobil 1 Synthetic, then the proper viscosity would be 0w-40 (also an approved oil). Don't use anything outside of the range of these oils, unless you have a very good reason.

The oili got is Bmw oil it's just the 40 bro what are u talking bout?

Not sure what Brand you are using... but you should be using 5w-30 for your particular engine. Why would you use anything else is the question?

As long as the oil used has a "LL-1" or "Long Life 1" rating you are fine. IF the oil has no LL rating then do not run it. You need to use a LL rated oil for the specially treated cylinder walls and piston rings in our engines. BMW says you can use an: 0w40, 0w30, 5w30 or a 5w40 LL-1 oil in the USA. Btw... you can also use a LL-4 rated oil where a LL-1 oil is spec'd, but not vice versa!

Maybe who ever changed you oil put too much oil in the engine. That would account for the slower reving. This is why I always do all my own oil changes myself. For my peace of mind.

I use 0w40 because it covers the widest heat temperature range. I believe the BMW oil in the states is a 5w30 rated oil.

I bought synthetic oil from my BMW dealership and it has no LL rating listed on the bottle. The parts guy assured me though that this is what they use. Its the grey BMW branded bottle (not Castrol for example). Is this the same stuff as LL-1?

If they gave you BMW Full Syn. 5w-30 then you'll be fine.

Mobil-1 0W40 is the top of the other approved oils that are permissible besides BMW's own oil.

For starting, the 0 is better than the 5, and for hot conditions, the 40 is better than the 30.

I use Mobil-1 0W40 in all of my vehicles, and it's Mobil's best formula.

I used to also use Mobil-1 0w40 euro blend oil bought on base over here. But then I started to read up on Castrol oil and decided to give the German made Castrol a shot. I was truly amazed on how much quieter the engine sounds on cold start. Much less metallic noises when cold or hot. AND... my oil temps are about two needle widths lower with the German Castrol. That sold me on G.C.

liqui moly 5w40 is what they put in my car!!!! Should I go get a refund now?? and tell them to switch my oil?!!

Obviously not, or we wouldn't be having this discussion / thread right now...

BMW High Performance Syn. Oil from the dealership is "5w-30" in the US... The oil you used might be capable of running in a BMW (At what efficiency? Who knows...), but it's certainly not "BMW Oil". I've never once heard of BMW recommending the use of that oil in a 1 series.

Will your car blow up when you start it in the morning? Probably not... but if your car is running that badly after a simple oil swap, then you might as well be running vegetable oil in your engine as far as I'm concerned.

This is what I use and it's great. It's LL-4 approved and I've gotten a few Blackstone oil tests back using this and the engine condition is always great according to them. I change mine at 5K and they think I can go a few thousand more with no issue. Just my 2 cents, but I think you're fine. I do however use the 5W-30 Liqui Moly:

I use motul 5w40 llo1 approved oil in my n52 128i - no problems.
