Will the 1 series M earn a title as "The Poors Mans //M"
Im quite excited to see the 1 Series M coupe release and intrique on how it handles. Cant wait to see it on the showroom.
However, a car with no legacy or heritage seem to bother me some and seems like the marketing folks are aligning its heritage to the e30 M3. Its still up in the air how this car will share the BMW M bright light. I researched the cost and can only find some rumour cost of about $45k fully equiped; except for some entertainment package etc. We've seen how the Porsche Boxters earn its claim as the poor mans Porsche. Do you think that this Car will earn the similiar title as The Poors Mans M car ? |

Minuses:
-Non M engine -Large depreciation after initial marketing driven interest subsides -Divisive styling -Weighs 46 lbs. more than the E46 M3, with only 2 extra hp. -Worse power to weight ratio than 10 year old E46 M3 -Carbon Build Up issues due to use of first generation Direct Injection Technology, resulting in loss of power and potential engine damage if expensive engine cleanings are not carried out -High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) failures are very common on this engine -Engine has a propensity to go into limp mode with track usage -Engine will be very underwhelming in comparison to the next generation of Turbo M engines -Need to invest additional $ in engine tuning to extract potential, however in doing so you risk voiding your engine and powertrain warranty Pluses -Newest M car, you can be first on the block -Warranty -Lots of torque -Tunable engine -Should have exceptional handling -Orange paint and interior stitching Poor man's M? I don't think so. It is a step towards what should be the best M, the enthusiasts M. However this attempt falls well short of meeting the criteria of a hardcore enthusiast special. In reality this car is what the 135 should have been in the first place. At least we know there will be a next gen 1M/M2, and it will be a much better car than this one. I think this 1M will earn the title of Modern Iteration of the US Spec E36 M3. |

So what. Call me a poor man.
I cannot afford a new M3 but I will be able to afford a new 1M or a used M3 and guess what. I will take the 1M. Why? I fell in love with the E46 M3 9 years ago and at the time that was the same price as the 1 M will be when it goes on sale. I wanted that M3. I don't really want the new M3. It's become too big. Too heavy. The fact that M have been told to make the best M car for a certain budget doesn't bother me either The fact is, that they have been able to do it and they have taken parts from a more expensive car and that makes it even better value for money. I love it. And can't wait. |

If someone gave me either car I'd choose the 1M over the E92. But that's just me... (former M3 owner)

I'm a former owner of a M3 (E46), but don't really like the E92. Same reasons you've mentioned, too big, too heavy, and honestly I've never felt in love with the E92, especially not with the rear. Seriously, I'd choose the 1M over the M3. |

I have also a 997 MK2 GT3. I want de 1M next to it as my daily drive/and driftfun. I have had a E90 M3. It is a to big car to toss around in the twisty s. I like the size of the 1M a lot more. As a family car i rather buy me a X3 or X5.
So poor mans M3 doesn t count for me. It s the best M car in the line up right now. The AG Turbo engine is a bit of let down. But everything else is fine. Turbo is ok if the price is low too. Every car maker can make turbo s so that s nothing special to begin with. If the asking price is low then turbo is ok. For a racing engine like the CSL bmw bmw can ask a higher price. I would never pay premium for a turbo engine. Every jap manufacturer has one. |

I don't think the "poor man's M3" is terribly accurate. This is a limited production car with few options which is still relatively expensive and clearly geared more towards enthusiasts than any other demographic. I suspect the majority of buyers will be cross shopping the 1M with the M3. Those who choose the 1M will do so due to M3 caliber handling in a smaller and somewhat lower weight package with livelier dynamics.

The idiot (jealous) douche's answer.
When will people learn that regardless of how much power they squeeze out with a chip, you CAN'T duplicate the handling. And considering the world doesn't consist of one straight road, handling is pretty important. |

I hate when people refer to a certain car as a "poor man's" car... it stinks of ignorance when people say that; sometimes a simpler car can offer a lot more purist experience, it is like Jay Leno says; it is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

I'd rather have the better performing car that people call "poor man's"
Then the crappier car that makes people think I'm "ballin'" If you're so worried about buying the car that impresses people the most, please buy another brand, don't douche up BMW drivers |

Probably exactly what some pretty short sighted people said about the E30 M3 compared to the E30 325 years ago.. I bet none of those haters would raise their hands up now and repeat the same thing..
Let's see... buy the limited edition 1M.. which will only be out for a single year..... let's say 3K total made....or the 135, of which 3K are made each week... hold onto both 15 years and tell me which person is the dumb one. |

I am curious why you think the handling can't be duplicated, or, more likely, exceeded?

When I had my STI, with the amount of money I dumped into it, I made the car's handling exceed that of cars two times the price of my STI (including the amount of money I dumped into it). Having looked into the work involved to upgrade my 335i, I can tell you that the parts for a new suspension set up, labor for installation, LSD, labor for installation, fab work for wider fenders to fit wider tires (not including wider rims). You're already WAY over the difference for the M model. Can you do it? Yes But with the money you'd have to spend, you'd have to be a REAL idiot. Dumb beyond description. And I'm already discounting the months of suspension re-working I did, which the M-division does before they sell you the car. Could you improve the 135i or 335i strictly with out of the box suspension components and LSD? Sure, but they won't be as great as the M models. To maximize the potential for the parts for a shot at exceeding the handling of the M models, something that so many of you fools think is easy as shit, you would have to dump in a ridiculous amount of money and time. Money that you could've spent on the M model with change. Time that you could've spent driving the M model. |
