N54 Break-in Period?

Hello everyone,

Im questioned about the break-in period when my 135i first arrives.. I've heard people claim that its better to drive under 5k rpm's for the first 1000 miles.. Now also I saw somewhere that the way you're gonna drive it longterm is the way you wanna drive it when you first get the car..

Does anyone know the proper way to break-in the car to prepare for JB3 tune, a pair of catless DP's, and a CAI.

Thanks,

Grant

The answer to this will depend on who you ask.. some say take it easy for the break in, varying your revs and others say to drive it hard...

Break in period is listed in the manual. Regardless of what you're going to do with it after.

Yes. Save up money for the inevitable denied warranty claims.

I'm taking it easy for 1,200 miles. Not going above 4500 RPM, and smashing down on the gas pedal or brakes.

After 1,200 though it's time to go a little bit crazy...

That's exactly what my CA told me, in addition to not go over 120 for the 1st 1200 miles. I'm driving to Belgium Sunday, I'll hit 1200 mile on the way. SWEET

Awesome! Have fun! And yea Grant if I remember correctly there was a thread regarding break-in but i think MegaMan is correct, dont go over 4500 RPM's under 1,200 Miles. We shuld do a 1,200mile trip wen our 1ers come in and throw the JB3's on at the same time ha.

Hi,

There are so many different opinions on break in methods.

Most major car manufacturers are aware that some people will not break the car in correctly. For example, a soccor mom goes out and buys a brand new Hummer 2, i dont think she is aware of break-in let alone where to pour the washer fluid. Manufacturers try as best they can to account for this (cold start-up protection is a good example).

In most cases, you will hear people say to drive it 'hard' and some people say to 'baby it'. I too have broken in numerous cars, I don't like to baby a brand new car nor do I like to 'romp' it all the time.

So I keep it simple, find the middle ground. The key to break in is to LOAD the engine and vary the RPMs frequently. Do not sit at 2500 RPM for an hour long trip on a new car.

A lot of times, engines come from the factory somewhat broken in for situations like soccer mom as mentioned above.

Always remember that no 2 cars are the same.

Please don't tear me apart on this, break-in is a sensitive subject. If you disagree with my methods please just let me know!

Thanks

My CA told me to take it easy (didn't give me an RPM) but not to baby it for the first 500 to 1000 miles. This engine needs it's exercise to break it in properly. I followed the rules pretty much, but now I'm at 2300 so it's game on! lol
