Noisy/thumpy suspension

After totalling my wife's '09 C300 Benz (!), she wanted to get a convertible.

So we ended up with the the 2010 128i. We're loving it. It's got PLENTY of performance, is surefooted, great looks/materials, and it's perfect for zooming around on sunny SoCal days. It's hard to keep that car under 80 on the freeway - it just sneakily keeps on adding mph and sits down like a battle tank.

But man is the suspension noisy! It's a pronounced "thumpy" set of noises that comes through the floor whenever you're on uneven rough roads (so basically all of LA!). Mostly at lower speeds.

We don't have the sport package, BTW. I'm chalking it up to convertible rigidity issues, the size of the car vs weight, and possible the run-flat tires?

Is this the same for others? It's just a bit of a sore issure because the Benz was much quieter and my Tacoma is, well, a truck.

Glad to be in the Bimmer family!! (wife always swore she would never own one....)

Dont have a vert or a 128 but my car with these run flats is a rough riding beast. My Z51(stiffer, sport susension) Corvette is Caddy smooth in comparison. Im thinking like you, the vert with the run flats is the issue. Theres no give in them and they make for alot of jolting and jossling. Im thinking of replacing mine and only 5K miles on em.

Did you buy your ONE new or used? Have you check the suspension links or sway bar ends? Or asked what your dealer thinks? Take them for a test drive and show them.

Whan you say thumping you don't mean tire noise do you? As in feathered or cupped tires? Run your hand along the circumference of the tires to check they are not "hilly" or have bumps on them.

Good Luck

am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with the RFT's?

Sure, performance wise they aren't like Pilot sports, but for day to day stuff, it's fine by me.

I love my 3rd gen run flats! Noise is low, grip is good (even for autocross) and ride is perfectly fine! The 3rd gen run flats only started with 2011s though I think.

If it's a new car make sure the dealer didn't leave the shipping blocks in the suspension. They are bright yellow. Very unlikely but it's happened.

"thumpy" on uneven, rough roads doesnt sound like tire noise to me.

Im thinking Hawaii roads are alot nicer than NY ones.

You'd be wrong. Our holes are full of potholes. The state fills them, only to have the pothole return a month later. They are horrible at maintaining the roads.

whatever generation it is, it is quiet, and provides adequate grip...

How can I tell what generation my RFT's are?

By the build date maybe? I also a happy with my RFT in my late 2010 (Dec '09) build.

I have a 2011 135i coupe M-Sport and I would definitely categorize the ride as "THUMPY."

So I am not sure what evolution of RFTs I have, but "Thumpy" is a great adjective to describe it.

Brand new. About 1200 miles on it today. i'll go crawl around underneath and see if I can see anything.

It's not tire noise. It's definitely the same sorts of sounds you hear from any suspension under duress (like if I go banging into a set of giant potholes in my truck). Unless the RFT are adding an extra acoustic element?

It's your RFT's mate. Change them to regular conventional tyres and you will notice a world of difference in noise and comfort

The RFTs are rough but once you get used to them you will like them.

Curious as to which cars you guys who think the RFTs are rough are coming from? I honestly think the 135 rides pretty darn smooth. Not as smooth as an Audi A5 maybe, but definitely not anywhere near as stiff as a VW GTi.

The RFT's are fine, it's just when you go over potholes etc. After you switch to normal tyres you realise what you've been missing out on, like anything else. After you mod, the weaknesses that are now gone are exaggerated due to the huge improvement over stock form.

Yea my 135i with BMW performance suspension and normal tires was so much smoother over bumps than my stock 335i + run flats. That "thud" sound over uneven roads is definitely the run flats.

Sounds reasonable.

Given it's the wife's car, I think the RFT's will have to stay on for their inherent convenience

Dont be mad,
I said they were better than NY roads. Ive been to Hawaii a couple of times and going to be there for Thanksgiving this Nov. All the paved roads I've seen on all the Islands are much better than NY roads. Perhaps you've heard of the world famous NY potholes. One cost me $600 two weeks ago for a tire and alignment in only the 4th month of ownership. Now thats reason to be

Coming from a Mini Cooper S running on non-RFTs, my 135i (2011) with RFTs is significantly quieter and smoother. The MINI was pretty bad for road noise, so my 135i feels like a cathedral in comparison.

I'm doing a 2800-mile road trip in a couple of weeks, and when I get back I'm replacing the RFTs with new summer tires. Going from RFTs to the summer tires on my MINI made a huge difference in road noise, and I'm looking forward to an even better ride.
