m3 cowl and strut braces
Been trying to get a few things done the last couple weekends. Finally got my M3 strut braces installed. And decided to switch out my stock cowl while I was at it. I like the look.

Looks great and more room to access the rear engine compartment. What Cowl is that?

Any chance you could weigh the E82 cowl and the E9x cowl to see if there is much of a weight saving if any?

Looks like it may allow the hot air to escape out the rear of the hood without getting sucked into the HVAC vents. Although there could be a high pressure zone at the base of the windshield which would have the opposite effect. Any perceptible reduction or change in engine temps?

these are the part numbers:
64-31-6-958-817 64-31-6-958-818 64-31-6-958-815 64-31-6-958-816 64-31-9-159-606 51-71-8-045-623 which I got from this e90 post: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=228781&page=2 I drove it around for a week without any cowls and I could hear turbos better. Once I installed, engine noise seemed to be the same as previous. I will see if I have anything handy to weigh the cowls. My guess would be the difference is nominal. I just like having more access to engine bay. I also thought that if I ever upgrade to CF strut braces I wouldn't want them hiding under plastic. |

Looks good, you have spared no expense and it shows.
Do the side drains on the M3 cowl line up the the 135 drains?

Put mine on today. Had to splice 3" more wire for the pollen filter to reach the bracket. The hood switch position is in a different location for the M3 and the switch was missing the hood crossbeam. Added a rubber end cap to extend it.
Used zip ties run though a rubber hose to secure the wire harnesses. Stock set up weight 10.4 lbs. M3 6.2 lbs. I put the bottom covers on but really don't see any need to do it since they are not at all weather proof. Had to modify the driver side bottom cover to clear the brake lines.

Edit: This is kind of like knowing if the refrigerator light is still on when you close the door. Started backing out of my shop and the hood open warning came on.
Ended up putting two layers of 5/16" adhesive back weather stripping on the underside of the hood to make the switch work. So 5/8" on the hood and 3/8" on the switch for a total of 1" gap to be made up.

Right after my last post I noticed that the windshield washer nozzles were sticking up through the hood. Had to make clearance cutouts in the filter housings and
fabricate plastic boxes that were waterproof. Added a wooden spacer for the hood sensor and attached with 3M adhesive. A lot more work than I thought to have everything work and fit.

i didn't notice mine unitil about a week after install. On mine they only stick up slightly, and don't seem to affect the spray. It just shoots a little higher. Was the difference more dramatic on yours?

Mine were sticking up 1/4" and very noticeable. They were at a angle and aiming up like yours. With the hood closed the nozzle on my car needs about 3/4" more clearance. Since the last photo I've made the hood switch much smaller and shaped it to look better.
With the hood closed there is no hood open message. If I release the hood latch inside the car but not the safety latch I get the hood open message. Removed the plastic end cap from the hood sensor.

Dang, my cowls on order and didn't know there were clearance issues.
How are the e92/e90 winshield nozzles mounted? Might be possible to retrofit the washers to avoid cutting into the plastic? I think the E90 washes are fixed near the black plastic trim below the winshield e82: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=61_1878 e92: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=61_2090 I cannot find a picture on the internet showing where they are mounted, all I know is they don't sit on top of the hood like the e82 ones. EDIT: Attached picture of e90 plastic trim with integrated washers. What are the chances of that trim fitting an e82? I am guessing the shape is going to be off
