On the ED pickup I had a few
1. Ground crew at The Ring stopped racking leaves and pointed at it 2. On the autobahn I had people take camera phone pics of it. In the US 1. Had a guy looking at it at the grocery store 2. One Honda driver gave a thumbs up Other than that, nothing. The best story I have from the car is a trip to Lowes. I parked by a new AMG in it. I figured he would not bump my doors. I return to see the guy checking his car to make sure I have not dinged him. I though that funny. In Little Rock we have three and I just don’t think people know what it is.

Got a guy pull up beside me today in a nice 135i convertible. He gestured for me to roll the window down, which I did. And he said...

I rarely notice the stares when I am driving, but when my wife is with me, she picks up on it and points it out. We get a few on every drive!

I was at a local car show yesterday and was asked on three separate occasions if my car was the new M3. After the second inquiry I replied yes it was the new M3.

Leaving an IKEA store near closing time, getting back to the car. Notice two twenty-something IKEA guys pushing a long queue of collected trolleys past my car. They notice the car, stop by, leave the queue of trolleys, and both walk around the car, checking it out from all sides (including the mandatory bending over with one hand in front of the forehead to check out the interior and dashboard). I waited to let them have their fun. I approached when they resumed pushing the trolleys. They kept staring as I slowly drove of the parking lot. Once exited from the parking lot, I floored it hard on the street to get them some ear candy. Could have been their talk of the day at the pub that Saturday eve.
Earlier this week: I come out of a small exit road of a parking lot and wait for a public bus to pass on the main street. Despite absolute priority, the bus slows down and the bus driver flashes with the lights. I was not sure whether he meant "Beware dude, I'm approaching" or rather "Proceed !", so I waited (better safe than sorry) and gave a sign that he may move on. He stops almost in front of me (thirty-something guy) and makes a sign with his hand that he will let me pass ...followed with exactly this smiley:

Spent the first night after ED in small Munich hotel; the clerk checking me in asks, "mind if I look at your car?" Goes out after taking care of another couple, walks all around and then "The PERFECT CAR!" Just the start of much appreciation by the Germans in Frankfurt, Nurburg and Trier. And Aussie at Nurburg pined that he only wished he hadn't taken himself off the waiting list, especially after I let him drive it.

Funny... Where I live people don't notice my car.
If you want to get noticed here, you need a big truck with huge tires! I like being incognito... |

Definitely: VO gets all the attention, most people notice the details of the car or what it is only after they notice the color first. AW and especially BSM are much more discrete, you need to know what a 1M is in order to notice them in a flowing traffic. I almost missed two AW 1Ms here while I was driving and once I walked by a BSM 1M in the BMW dealer, noticed it later. Doesn't happen that way with VO which is sometimes good sometimes bad.

"With that color, it's easy to spot the car" my wife recently remarked when collecting the car from a big underground car park.

I couple of old Jewish ladies once came up to my car at the Mall as I was pulling out of a parking spot. They gestured to me to roll down the window and I did expecting them to say something about the loud exhaust or something. Instead one of them said "You have a gorgeous car. You should be very proud"

I was at a Lowes Hardware store this AM loading my car. I man came up to me and wanted to know EVERYTHING about the car-- HP, torque, brakes, mods from regular 1 series, differences from M3, etc.-- said he had never seen one before and was really impressed. He was a car guy also [owned 7 cars at the moment]. He then gave me his card, said he was a professional photographer, and would like to photo my car- for free!... he wants to do it in late June.

I was getting into the driver's seat of my 1M with a male friend getting into the passenger seat when a guy across the road said;
"Jeez, he's letting his wife drive it...." I've also had a copper sit in the lane next to me for about a kilometre and a half, until I pulled off the highway. |
