Retro-Mod 2002 built from 135i
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com According to the article, it's fiberglass bodywork on a 135i chassis. They reuse the e88 windshield and trunk lid for the soft top, with modern round bi-xenon headlights & led tails. Based on the photos it's a n55 DCT. I like the looks. If BMW built this i would buy one. Especially if there was a hardtop version. I'd think it would look better without the idrive in the dash for a cleaner look. Here is a video showing the engineering & build. Pretty cool stuff. I like how at the end they start it up.

I'd love it in coupe form, but, man, $80K is steep!

The want is strong for this one.
That's beautiful! The trunk is a little awkward, but this is a really cool and unique idea, and I appreciate those...

Lol, the one really bad part of the 1'er is the worst part of this, too...

I like it. My car currently holds piss poor wholesale value and this looks like a money flush right down the toilet.
It’s much better fit and finish, mine looks dowdy and 02 kinna improves the looks... Honestly I’d like this done to my car but closer to the original sketch art rendering. |

Yep, the car is gorgeous in real life. I saw this car at a classic car show in Stuttgart last year(March, 2018) The problem is the car's price... from what I remember... they said the conversion costs ~68K euros... PLUS a donor car!! That's pretty dear IF you ask me. And then you must wait... for the work to be done. ~1 year, from what I remember them saying. Their work was really astounding though.

Thanks for sharing those photos, Dack.
Although the looks are initially off-putting to some, I think these unique 135i-based 2002's are fascinating and would be serious fun to drive. The fit and finish of the build also looks great on both, especially on the interior. It's surprising how well integrated the cabin is with the rest of the design. They're also a good illustration of how correct the dimensions of our cars are, and just how large everything else has grown. The E82 was just right, and remains so. |

Agreed. When the E82 came out, a lot was made about it being the ancestor of the 2002, and, while it doesn't necessarily look like a 2002 side by side, it ticks all the same boxes in terms of size vs the competition, tall greenhouse, etc.

Dackelone I don't think there's a single BMW related thing, especially 1er-specific, that you don't already know about LOL. Great pics. 68k euro and a year's wait is nuts though!

Do you think if this was the original 1er it would have sold better/worse?
I know they could never just release a random bizarre design that goes against the rest of the line but it would be interesting. I think this is objectively cool, if not everyone's cup of tea. Its not like anyone at the time liked the way the 1 actually turned out anyway. |

When admiring M3 e30’s or e21 323’s I see the precursor more then 2002’s. I’d dislike future admirers to look at my 1r as a BMW PT Cruiser ish. I think if BMW releases this 02 retro in 2007 it would have less of a following now and once the novelty wears off it’s A punchline. |
